So, while browsing yuri games on steam, I found this one

It's pretty rare to find games with Black characters, so seeing this one, and seeing that the Black girl (named Alice) is the protagonist, got me really excited for it, and seeing her lively and pretty skintone made me believe for a moment that her design as a Black character was good.

BUT, then I saw her dad..

and it Completely broke that illusion for me. Seeing this supposed Black man with such a Terrible and Lazy design made it obvious to me that they didn't try or care, he's some generic anime man that they bucket-tool-painted brown.. AND with blue eyes.

It was so jarring that it made me realize Alice's design isn't that good either, I was settling down for a mediocre design when I had nobody else to compare her to.

So I made a like 20 minutes edit of her! It's not perfect, but it cemented for me that they could've tried A BIT more with her design, but they chose Not to (not even for the game's protagonist -_-).

(I didn't attempt editing her dad, because his design is unsalvageable, they'd need to start over with him 😐)

For the Melanin Beam Challenge, I picked Purah because she's one of my favorite LoZ characters, and I thought it would be fun to make a Black redesign of her and give her coily hair. I also love eccentric scientist/engineer/inventor characters who are women, and I want more of them to be Black women. I realized while brainstorming designs that her canon design has a headband that matches the trim of her coat, but you can barely see it, so I decided to make it more prominent for the redesign. It was really fun to make!! Happy Birthday and thanks for all of your lessons!

Eccentric Black Lady Scientist- she just like me fr! 🥹🥹🥹🥹😭😭😭😭😭 I want more of those characters too 👉🏾👈🏾 I love the color you chose for her skin!! The headband was such a good style choice; I used to do that look all the time! It's so easy and such a cute updo for afros. Never misses. Y'all really be out here super skilled!

notes and design choices under the cut

after quite a bit of research which was very much helped out by the creatingblackcharacters blog, i decided i wanted to give her soft goddess locs for quite a few reasons;

1. soft locs are a type of faux loc. they're a better option for tender-headed people (which i felt fit usagi's character tbh) and those who don't want to spend all the time and effort it would take to grow out locs (also fits her character imo bc she's lazy and locs require a Lot of patience and maintenance)

2. i also wanted to make them goddess locs because the curly ends sorta mirror her canon design with the curls at the end of her pigtails, and i realized after thinking about it that it fits perfectly considering sailor moon is quite literally the reincarnation of a goddess! we love a bit of wordplay

3. additionally, to quote cbc's lesson 2, "Many Black people consider the biblical story of Samson to be a man with locs, and that our locs hold power within them." again, it works perfectly with sailor moon being a goddess!!

as for the second piece, i really just wanted to draw her in pajamas and a bonnet
