Typhoid Mary: The True Story
Mary Malluk was a beautiful, bright, Irish immigrant with a brown face and a big smile. Teddy Roosevelt was President, and she was considered a five-star chef. Many families had hired her on as a family cook, cleaner and child care provider; she worked at some of the grandest and wealthiest homes on the East Coast.
Mary was part of a huge wave of Irish immigrants who came to New York via Ellis Island in the late 1800s, when Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt was hanging his hat at the White House and frequently visited Old New York City.
Then Mary came down with a high fever and other symptoms.
When the Health Inspector saw Mary, he had her confined to a bed, even though she was feverish and had feces on her apron and gown, her symptoms abated and she was pronounced cured.
Soon after, the same man — the Health Inspector — spotted her again. She was cooking and tending babies, and he pulled her out, telling everyone he met who she was, and that Mary had relapsing typhus or Typhoid Fever.
He had to get the word out without infecting anyone or letting anyone else hire her or touch any babies, with or without gloves.

Today, Saturday, November 29, 2025, anyone with a childhood DPT (Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus) and polio vaccine should be immune to those diseases, although you may need a tetanus booster.
Typhoid is no longer considered a communicable disease, but remember Typhoid Mary; her typhus kept coming back. 🩺
