i grew stuff this year
day 1 of gardening i started off excited. all i kept thinking was free food from the earth! i knew i had my boo (the farmer/chef) by my side so i would be ok. <3
but by mid day i was a little anxious. like what’s a row and what’s a walkway and measuring and moving dirt. i never really saw a garden before so i didn't know the big picture. then we got our rows and paths all set and it looked like what i thought a garden should look like.
it took a couple of weeks for the first things to sprout but i was so excited. i was really growing stuff. i told everyone about it and couldn't stop talking about it. i was so excited to learn how many people in my community were gardening too.
then a couple of weeks later we realized that none of our greens sprouted. this was my first garden disappointment. sometimes the seeds are old or birds eat them or i don't water them enough. who knows. sometimes things dont grow.
i learned a lot of disappointments about gardening this season. i mourned for a squash plant i had to dig up after only one or two squashes. some disease took over it but i kept hoping i could just trim off the diseased parts. then there was nothing left.
i also had to figure out what to do with all this produce. okra, tomatoes, peppers. i know i should've been excited but then i felt anxious. all this free food. but what now? I don't know how to cook this stuff. i don't even know how to store it until im ready to cook it. my boo was super supportive and gave me some good tips.
my tomatoes just grew and grew and grew. they broke all of my cheap tomato cages and took over half my garden. i dont even think i like tomatoes that much. by the end of the season i stopped going to my garden altogether. i realized that i had a lot of emotions about gardening.
but there were so many big wins. i grew peppers, tomatoes, lavender, mint, okra, squash, potatoes and watermelon! they all tasted delicious. well not sure about the watermelon. it got stolen right before i went to harvest them. thats another thing that happens in community gardens. but it was so excited to care for something and see it from seed to fruit. i woke up early on weekends to water my garden and would sit and daydream about what was growing. eating sweet organic produce was the biggest win.
i wrote this blog because i didnt want the season to end and i forget what it was like having my first community garden plot. i think of myself as a gardener now and i cant wait to see what i grow next year.

I added some seeds to my collection from SISTAH SEEDS by Amirah Mitchell (ig: @sistahseeds). Her focus is heirloom veggie, herb and grain seeds from African-American, Afro-Caribbean, and West African cultural crops. Isn't her Branding so pretty 😍! I was put on to her through the Tumblr, @seedkeeping. I'm honestly most excited to add these chocolate scotch bonnets to the garden this year! I'm still a beginner/learning-gardener so please pray for my little garden🤞🏾🤣. More garden posts coming at some point...🧘🏾♀️.

Sistah Seeds
Having the ability to go out into my garden and pluck a few veggies and herbs to put into a dish is such a productive feeling. I pray that in the future the entirety of my meals can be home grown or locally sourced--that's the goal.
Recent activity in my little garden, it's not perfect but it's mine.
Sewed seeds last Sunday and this happened within a few days - cute little sprouts, we'll see how fall gardening goes...to be continued
