How To Make A Leather Blacksmith Apron
This is a very simple for making a Leather Black Apron for use in your wood shop or just for use around the house. Aprons come in handy for all sorts of things and can be exceptionally customizable. There are a few simple steps to follow to get the perfect apron for you.
- Select and Cut Your Leather
- Chose Your Pocket and Strap Layout.
- Sewing/ Rivet construction
Step 1: Choosing Leather and Cutting the Pattern
When making an apron there are a lot of potential factors to take into consideration such as weight, cost, and area of use. These will play into your Blacksmith Leather Apron Pattern. I strongly suggest going to a local leather store and talking with them if you are unfamiliar with the different cuts, weights, and tanning methods.
Step 2: Pocket and Strap Layout
Now that we have our pieces cut out, we can choose a design. I chose a simple set of compartments with a hammer holster. This is your chance to be as inventive as you want. You can put pockets within other pockets or build a fast layout guide like I did. One thing I suggest is double-checking that the pocket you select will accommodate the item you intend to put in it. Because I didn't like the way the hammer sat on the hip, I had to cut three different designs for the hammer holster. The important thing to remember is that there is no such thing as a bad response, but there is very little room for error once you've moved on to the process stage.
Putting the belt and pockets together I attached the components in two different ways. I then set the belt and neck pieces where I wanted them and sketched a delicate shape with a sharp awl before applying contact cement to the inside of the scribes area and the back of the strap. I carefully placed them together once they were tacky. I then used rivets to reinforce the connection. You're ready to go on to finishing once all of the straps and pockets have been set.
