KushStorm.
Shoot w/ BlackSpaceOdyssey. Lower East Side, NYC/2016 I met these guys during a summer afternoon outing in deep Bushwisk, Brooklyn. The venue was a concrete back yard next to a working auto garage. I stumbled on something special, as though the bosses called a meeting of the bosses. An event designed for musicians by musicians. I caught their set and I approached them to learn a little more, though we connected over my film camera and the bond was formed. I got the chance to talk shop with them and over time would catch them during their Manhattan and Brookyn shows. The sets were never the same and each venue gave me a snapshot of the road. A Black Space Odyssey. These guys had come together over time, the core from where they group up in the North east and others along the way in Brooklyn, each with their own origin story leading them to New York City. You could feel their musical style was inspired by a long line of genres. Their sound was a combination of electronic, noise, hip hop and experimental. At least that’s what I could identify.
...Every voyage launches with Lean Automatic on sonically digitized vocals, while op grime and SentZ pilot live drums and production respectively, Benny Lo brings analog atmosphere on guitar. What planet the Kushstorm ends on depends on how the four choose to improvise, navigating over a bed of fast paced native rhythms, system shaking bass, and refreshingly honest & complex lyrics.
This time around ahead of a show in the Lower East Side, the guys had added a new member to the group and were enthusiastically excited about the momentum they built. It was easy to feel like their excitement was my excitement. I took these shots on what I still believe to be hollowed grounds, where the grit became glam, the committed cut their teeth and went on to great things.
