Blacks often had the system of “underground languages”, where they would take terms from the white culture and use their own meanings to sort of “throw it in their face”. There were already a lot of racial tensions at the time due to problems in the government and laws. In the 1970’s American culture these terms came with a sense of pride and attitude that they had their own meanings for these common phrases. Phrases like “bad” sort of blew up in pop culture and the underground meaning became a culture norm for whites too soon after. Years leading up to now the term seem to fade but if someone used the once underground context it was still understood.
