Curséd crust, and how I blame my wife

When my daughter began eating real people food (i.e. not goopy baby mess), she took a liking to a staple of my morning diet: toast. We'd cut it in fours, and she eat it from the center out- sometimes devouring the whole thing, sometimes leaving the crust. When having a bite of my toast, she'd take the first bite sometimes- and, not having cut my own piece of toast in fours, she'd get a mouthful of crust- and be fine with it.

I like the crust. The end of the loaf of french bread? Yes. A big, chewy and doughy end to my slice of pizza? Sign me up. The heel of a normal, store-bought loaf? Sure, sometimes it's the best piece in the batch. You see, my love affair with bread does not end when the end begins. My wife on the other hand...

At some point, I became aware of the fact that my wife, when making Miss K some toast, would cut all the crusts off- stating that she didn't like the crust. It had never been a problem, I thought, when she didn't want the crust she wouldn't eat it. Then I realized that when I made her toast- she wanted no crust. When asking for demanding a bite of mine, I had to bite around the outside first, so as to remove the crust from her bite.

Pizza crust now had to be removed from the pizza, and often times the plate before eating commenced. Another trait taken from my wife-- no she doesn't remove it prior to eating, but it's no secret she never eats the crust, leaving her plate littered with "pizza bones," as I like to call them.

So it would seem as though my little girl, in the course of about a year, has gone from "crust-eater" to "crust-not-minder" to "completely-crust-adverse." And I am not making any BONES about who's to blame.

It's come to a head recently, when taking a waffle out of the toaster (yes I feed my child frozen waffles, judge me if you must), K asks to me to remove the crust. After trying many times to explain to her that waffles don't have crust- I now peel off any parts of the waffle that may be deemed by her majesty as crust. Not limited to the extreme edges- any overly brown/darker part of the waffle that could be construed as such is subject to removal. 

I don't like to play the blame game, but I am looking squarely at you, wifey. So many things in this life can be blamed on me, but I am throwing my hands up with this one. When it comes to bread products, I'm in it til the ends.

video games scapegoated again, yeah shocker right?

I warn you now this will contain my true feeling's on this subject and will contain minor references to religion and politics thought i will apologize for none of it.  

First off this is in no way here to diminish how tragic and totally unnecessary the death's of at least 28 people including 20 children are, this is about the fact that assigning blame to something totally unconnected as a scapegoat may in fact take the real issues out of the light and allow things to be missed or forgotten however i do understand that in the fallout of an incident as brutal and shocking as this people will look for something to focus on and blame after something this appalling  it's just human nature to do so.

Video games are just one of many things over the years which have been scapegoated by politicians, the media or religious groups for various reasons, for instance in the 80's it was rock music which was "an immoral and corrupting influence" then later it was so called video nasties (horror film's like the evil dead) in the late 80's and 90's which were banned because "many people may copy what they see in them", no one did to my knowledge, then at the end of the 90's and early 2000's it was rap music "promoting ill treatment or woman, violence and drug abuse", an attempt was made in the wake of a German school shooting somewhat successfully to blame slipknot and metal music in general for the incident but recently from as early as 2005-2006 to blame every violent incident and socially unacceptable epidemic on video games for one reason or another.

Would you like to know why games are being blamed for Connecticut? The actual gunman Adam Lanza's brother Ryan Lanza was identified as the perpetrator of the shooting and as is usual people flooded to his Facebook page to pour over it for reason's and "evidence", as soon as anyone noticed he had "liked" mass effect that was it people had found their reason it was again the great evil of video games. This wasn't helped by the worldwide embarrassment which is fox news jumping on the bandwagon and once again demonstrating it's still in a time warp stuck 10 years back in time with no knowledge of the modern age because to fox searching for knowledge on the internet and those damnable online gaming thingies caused this to happen as well as all other evil in the the western world today by dehumanizing people and making us too darn smart for our own good.  

But why were video games blamed? why are any of these cultural idioms blamed for the evils of the world? Well as i said people look for things to blame in times of crisis more so after an incident like this because it gives people a focus for a while so things seem less up in the air and without meaning which makes sense and though i find it distasteful i can at least understand it in the short term. 

Yep fine but video games are attacked weekly regardless of any real reason for a variety of reason's from causing obesity to causing incident's like Connecticut shooting spree, the fact is however that the things games are blamed for causing are caused by us human beings, why are your kids overweight? Because you allow them sit snack all day and never make them get off the computer because your scared of or bored with the argument you'll have if you try get them too move. So why did Adam Lanza commit the act's that he did? because i'd wager he was mentally ill already more than likely and had learning difficulties which can add to mental problems in a variety of ways due to feeling's towards yourself or other people's reactions to you.

The US has a culture in which firearms are deeply ingrained and are given a huge level of leeway and respect, having a gun mean's your someone to be feared and who's order's are to be listened too and followed which makes them very alluring to someone who is for instance bullied at school or in some other way feels powerless as it's instant power over their tormentors, why be so random and kill just anyone? because your planning to die so why not i'd imagine or just to be remembered one way or another, a twisted kind of fame. there could be a hundred reasons why people choose to do things like these but honestly they will mostly likely never be discovered as these shooting usually end in suicide either by their own hand or as I've heard it called "suicide by cop". What i do know is that everyone i know (or at least 90% of them) play's video games and non have to my knowledge committed any violent act's as a result of it nor have for that matter i and i play for 10 hours most days so i somehow doubt video games, movie or music are the reason people to commit these kind of hideous act's. 

So why isn't it possible game's are to blame? because guns are. In England the closest we've come to this kind of crime happened at a school in Scotland known as Dunblane primary school in 1996, so why if it has happened before has it not happened again? Well because shortly afterwards private gun ownership was banned on all firearms but shotguns and rifles needed for work purposes. since then no more schools have been attacked in this way using gun's. As for the motives of 43 year old Thomas Hamilton we wont ever know if it was all over video games but i'd make a tentative guess that it wasn't, sometimes strangely people decide to do this kind of thing for no reason anyone but them can figure out but giving them gun's (his were all legally obtained) or making them easy to get by other means is like throwing napalm on a burning building, it's never going to improve the situation. 

The long and the short of it is this, to commit an act like this you have to be mentally ill to think in the kind of extreme's this kind of attack requires and no song, movie or game can stir up this kind of emotion in someone, it could potentially be a trigger but then so could seeing 2 people in love, getting the wrong order at McDonalds or seeing something on the news, do we ban all of these things? no of course not that's ridiculous, but guns yes they can be banned from public ownership and made very difficult to obtain as the UK has proven, will it happen? likely not due to the massive level of emotion in the US on the subject of gun control and the outcry it would cause if any president tried to bring these laws in and enforce them but it would help in my opinion to keep guns away from people who might cause this kind of atrocity by making them difficult or almost impossible to obtain which would put many off or at least get a few on the radars of law enforcement agency's.

As for blaming games for these things all your really doing is distracting people from the real issues which most people gamer's or not see through but which will always snare the easily led all the same, issues like the lack of or or difficulty obtaining mental health care in the US for instance which makes it useful as a political tool, sometimes religious leaders will try to use the subject to appear up to date and modern but again it's just a distraction tool or something to try and catch the younger crowd, sometimes psychologists or talking heads will get involved for the sake of some TV air time while demonstrating just how little they understand the world they now live in. Whatever the reason to demonize gaming and gamer's eventually the "moral majority" will move on to something else to scapegoat as has always been the cycle to date which at one point let's not forget was books.
