jeanne watson: disgraced ER doctor becomes a medical examiner after the stress of her previous occupation drives her into a very deep depression. she discovers evidence during an autopsy of a man who died of a severe allergic reaction that someone may have poisoned him. later, she recognizes a person she saw in the ER a number of times on the news, billed as a good samaritan who attempted to save the victim. she recognizes this person from her time as a doctor, and realizes they'd been involved in multiple similar situations, but had never failed before. worried that her suspicions are correct, she goes to her childhood friend, detective myron morgan, who insists there isn't enough evidence to launch an investigation.

sherlock holmes: brilliant and often insufferable genius consulting detective who overhears a conversation between jeanne and detective morgan. she chooses to take up jeanne's case, and the game is afoot.
