For those of you pondering the depths of the upcoming military Blended Retirement System (BRS), here are a few knowledge nuggets on the lump-sum option. BRS allows a 25% or 50% lump sum payment, “of the discounted retired pay that would be due a member from the date of retirement until the date the member would reach full Social Security retirement age.” Although nobody will be eligible (the system isn’t available until 2018 AND you’d need less than 12 yrs of service to enroll), the CY18 Government Discount Rate (GDR) is set at 6.99%. There’s a great write-up here, which further explains the lump-sum option along with a fair warning to truly consider tax impact in this decision.
As always, check out www.blendedretirementsystem.com for more BRS information and links!
Great discussion on pros/cons of the new military Blended Retirement System in this article from Army Times. Excerpt: “had these service members received a 5 percent match in their respective TSPs for the past 18 years, they would have received roughly $33,500 and $62,000 in matching funds.”
