Simulated Intelligence.
I object to the term Artificial intelligence. It has been promised for the last 60 years as becoming available in only a couple more years. It aint here yet. I expect it to never arrive.
But the term is thrown about everywhere as if it were real. “This product was developed using artificial intelligence.” Could they not afford real intelligence?
There are many methods and tricks used to make a computer appear it is conversing with a person. People will assume that say a pet dog “understands” them and is really intelligent. I know that people will imbue intelligence and a personality in their cars. So we are pretty easy to fool. Throw in a few well documented methods (in use since 1966!) and you gotta candidate.
There are machine learning methods where developers will feed huge swathes of data into a program and it learns how to respond based on the responses in the data. A convenient cheat of this is to have social network conversational streams fed into a bot so it learns how humans talk. Facebook apparently lets bots have a presence on their platform for fun but bad actors have been able to abuse the concept to extract money from trusting humans. I wonder who you can arrest if there is no actual person?
There was an item on the news about two Chatbots having a date. A “male” bot called Blender Bot was paired with a female bot called Mitsuku. They have been talking to each other for weeks 24/7. Just each other. Just talking as that is all they can do. I just took a peek and they were saying goodbye but neither would leave so it was quite loopy as a conversation. I assure you there is no intelligence there.
Like many things the entire field is mislabeled. It is only a simulation of intelligence. It appears to a very superficial observer to be credible, but it fails under any pressure. These things are useful for customer services as one notch above the “for account information press 2″ type of thing. But if you have an accent or do not know the proper term or phrase you get nothing. Pressing 2 starts to look good.
An Artificial thing, say like a metal hip joint will work just like the real thing. Fully functional perhaps with limitations, but not big ones. Artificial flavors used in foods use the same chemicals as real flavors, they just come from a lab. They work the same way.
The term artificial means made by skill or artifice. It does not mean the thing made is phony or fake. It works the same way. Simulation means to try and make something usefully like a real thing. Flight simulators let pilots practice things that are rare occurrences or dangerous to do in a real aircraft. Nobody thinks of them as artificial planes.
Machine learning is for lazy programmers and bad planners. Just throw gobs of data at an algorithm and hope something comes out useful.
The really big thing is humans do not know how our thinking works. You cannot read a thought from a brain even if you had an almost infinitely detailed scan by a powerful machine. Our state of understanding is like showing a picture of a computer chip to a caveman. If you do not know how a thing works you cannot make a functional copy. Guesses do not count.
It is interesting that the Blender Bot was developed by a big money company using machine learning and the Mitsuku bot was written by one person to respond how he thought a real person would. Mitsuku has won the prize as the best chatbot on earth several years running. Helps no doubt that writer is a real person.
