It is very tough it's not as simple as "oh I've got to use a white cane now". But it's your own perception of it that's the key not those around you... This will become a necessity for your independence - and when your sight has deteriorated that much to need a white cane the one thing you need to feel is INDEPENDENT - it's something you have to learn to adapt to and put the "people will be staring" to the back of your mind (for me in reality they could stare all they want because I can't SEE them! Lol it doesn't effect me, but it might family and that's something they have to deal with I can't tell them how to do that but they get over it too) it's easy for me to say all this now I know, it's a big step for someone blind or with a vision impairment to take...but trust me it's WORTH IT to have control of independent mobility especially when - if like me - you're sight has deteriorated that much.
I also found that I needed to develop a sense of humor and to see the funny side when using the white cane - you'll get people saying things / asking questions some of them reasonable and some that could be absolutely crazy! 😂
"What are ye doing with the stick?"
Or my personal favourite I heard recently (which my friends who use white canes too have been asked but I never believed til it happened)
"Is that a metal detector?"
All the things I hear are part no awareness and the other ignorance unfortunately but it is important to find the humor in it at times.
For people starting to use a white cane it does take time like most things but stick with it (pun intentional 😉)
Also on a side note - The cane is also great for tripping younger brothers up 😄😄 see it can be useful for other things too! LOL
