Did you know that the Blinded Sphinx Moth (Paonias excaecata) are neither blind nor sphinxes? These moths are commonly found throughout much of Canada and the US and are most active at night.

Because the adults do not feed they need to spend as much of their limited energy as they can into breeding and not waste it on little things like blinking or dancing. They don't have eyelids to blink with in actuality but they do have large eyespots on their hindwings that they use to deter potential predators.

Blinded sphinx moths (Paonias excaecatus) are a nocturnal moth species native to North America. They have blue eyespots on their lower wings, which earn them the "blinded" title, since they lack the inner black pupil. They typically only live 1-2 weeks, and the one that I found was struggling to fly so I bet she was on the older side. The one that I found was a male, but I call all moths "she" because I can.

here's a Blinded Sphinx(?) moth i found back in may 2023! some people were terrorizing it outside so i relocated it somewhere safer <3 the lil guy also blends in with my wallet lol

(don't worry about it's antenna! it was revealed to me and my friends later that it was just hidden, and wasn't gone!)
