Discovered in 1793 by William Herschel (1738-1822), this nebula is best seen during the summer in the northern hemisphere. Young and small, the planetary nebula is only about a thousand years old and less than half a light year across.

This small planetary nebula is about 2,000 light years away in the constellation of Cygnus, the Swan. The nebula got the name "Blinking Planetary Nebula" because when viewed through a telescope directly, the brightest of the central star overwhelms the eye, obscuring the surrounding nebula. However, when looked at it out of the corner of your eye, the nebula is revealed, "blinking" in and out of view and your eye wanders! 👁️
