#blocked cat

Hi, my cat just came back home from the pet hospital for treatment of a total urinary obstruction. I caught it after he’d become lethargic and had a hard bladder when palpated. I was wondering what some earlier signs may be in the event this happens again. I’d hate to miss something and let him get this close to dying again.

Blocked cat is extremely dangerous. Good thing that you catch that before it's too late. There's not much time after a cat becomes completely blocked before time runs out.

Watch his litter box activity. Does he take longer than usual, does the urine color become abnormal, is there blood in it. Is there pus in it. Does he vocalize when trying to strain. Does his urine stream becomes narrower than usual, does it becomes drops instead of stream.

If yes, he's probably partially blocked, or he might have other kinds of urinary problem.

If he strains, but no urine comes out, that's an emergency.

Overnight

First overnight shift at my new clinic! Poor blocked kitty needed monitoring overnight, no work today so why not? He breezed through the night just fine, and I came home and crashed after 22 hours at work!!! (With naps of course! ;) )

"My cat is breathing really fast and is straining every time he's in the litter box. Can I give him cranberry juice?"

This same client had to be told *three times* that the cat needed to be seen. The cat's respiratory rate was at 60-70 breaths per minute. TACHYPNEA AHOY!

Tonight on VS.

I just left the clinic on lunch and there was a battle going on between 2 of the Vets. Their weapons: constipated cat getting an enema vs cat receiving a urinary catheter. Poo cat vs pee cat Vet with pee cat drew first... Blood? Idk but I'm dying to know who won XD

My cat is peeing pretty much normal now AND I AM SOOO HAPPY :)

I would like to be able to breathe and go to sleep for the few hours that I have. That would be nice. I can't believe I've only been well for a little over a week and I got sick yet again. Fucking stress. It's not allergies, I've taken so many allergy pills omg. 

In other news, my baby Figs is doing better! His urine isn't bloody anymore, and he doesn't seen as painful that's for sure. Tomorrow morning I'll pick him up from the ER and take him back to RDVM where they'll pull his Urinary catheter and watch him all day to make sure he's urinating. If he reblocks, they'll have to re-catheterize him and I might have to start looking into uretheral shortening surgery. :/ Hopefully the prednisone will help with the inflammation and he can get over this. I feel like this is a catch 22, he can't seem to get better because every time he pees he grooms himself/scoots causing more inflammation which in turn is making it harder for him to pee and then he strains and well- you get the picture.
