hey bowie!! wanted to ask what you thought in terms of significance when we consider the positioning of yasmina and younes IN FRAME during the carrot scene. more specifically, the fact that yousmina turns around while younes teaches her how to peel the carrot (ref first 2 pics: so both of then are technically looking to one direction). then yasmina turns around, and they're both facing inward towards each other (ref last 2 pics: when they start talking about kids). what do you think, oh smart one?
Here we talk about elements of blocking and how they reflect our hero’s state of mind and emotions. In order to fully understand those blocking choices we have to put them in the context of what is said between the two subjects.
If you notice as Younes moves closer to Yasmina she appears more timid and slightly uncomfortable at first with that closeness. Immediately she turns around and gives herself space to breath but it is important that the intimacy is not lost as the lines their bodies create in the shot remain close and parallel.
Yasmina doesn’t really care to learn about the proper way of peeling carrots. She is facing away from Younes more at the beginning but as the conversation progresses she engages in more eye contact and her eyes focus more on him and what he is doing. All that visually reflect her thoughts and feelings. The topic now is interesting to her. She cares to listen. She gets pulled in.
You will notice that she starts turning around once the conversation changes and they start talking about kids and their family views. As Younes reveals more about himself Yasmina turns fully inwards and she appears still parallel but much closer to him. Now they are on the same page. This time around, she has chosen that closeness, she is comfortable with it comparing to the beginning of their encounter where the closeness was brought to her by Younes.
