You parse through the many Imperial Archives, some dating as far back as prior to the Horus Heresy, some to the present day of the 41st Millennium. Warpfrost still nips at its edges like a cruel endless winter. This should not be here. And yet it is anyway. The gods' laughter could be heard with every written word.
AZARIEL / VOLKO.
Azariel of the Luna Wolves-- also known as Volko into the modern Millennium-- was the young Chief Apothecary of the Luna Wolves during the Great Crusade. Considered something akin to a young runt compared to that of many of the more well-known brothers of his, Azariel was a determined young man determined to stick to noble ideals as well as the teachings of his Primarch, Horus. However, these were inevitably warped as the Sons of Horus eventually fell to Chaos.
Born on Cthonia to one of the lesser-known gangs, Azariel joined the Luna Wolves at a young age and went through the grueling neophyte training to become a scout and then an apothecary. With his skill in tending to others, he quickly rose to the ranks of Chief Apothecary right before Horus would be coronated to be Warmaster. Inevitably, though, the Legion would fall to Chaos with Horus's corruption.
He was one of the many unfortunate souls of the Sons of Horus that would be corrupted and turn traitor. Azariel's corruption first began when he was barred from tending to Horus on Davin due to the meddling of Erebus. It was eventually revealed that Horus had been 'healed', but there was a grim realization within the young Chief Apothecary of what had happened due to his distrust of the process, leading to Chaos to exploit this guilt of being unable to tend to his Primarch and slowly warp him over the years that the Sons of Horus began to fall to this corruption.
By the time of the Heresy, he had gone mad. He had lost his way and became a butcher, fully warped by the Ruinous Powers and yet still his loyalty for his Primarch did not fade-- so he worked to find what he called a 'cure', something to free his father from this warp-madness, hunting for poor souls that did not fit with the Warmaster's plans and used them to further his research. Such a habit would only grow far more intense with the death of Horus the Warmaster and the Legion retreating into the Eye of Terror.
And yet, the death of Horus (and the subsequent stealing of his body by the Emperor's Children) brought a clarity to Azariel. As he remembered his roots and his oaths as an apothecary from ages before, Azariel was disgusted with himself. He left what was now the Black Legion due to the Slave Wars and joined the warband the True Sons, only to leave them as well, and hunted into the depths of the Warp to find repentance with what little clarity he could cling to.
None know what this lost butcher found, but some say he may have found a shard of the Emperor in his endless pilgrimage to free himself from Chaos. Through this, he was mostly cleansed of corruption, and found himself on a planet on the fringes of the Imperium outside of warpspace through unknown means.
He was granted another chance at life.
So now, he goes by Volko. Living upon a feudal world that was introduced to new medical technology thanks to Volko's knowledge of the past, the reformed Luna Wolf lives as a head doctor, working to help who he can, determined to stay true to his and his Primarch's original ideals... but can he truly resist Chaos's call for long?

You parse through the many Imperial Archives, some dating as far back as prior to the Horus Heresy, some to the present day of the 41st Millennium. These look to be as old as the great Unification era, when the God-Emperor still walked the sacred grounds of Terra when it was a land of barbarians. There appear to be no other records about this individual besides this small scrap of data.
RTB-01 / SERKAN.
RTB-01, though lesser known as Serkan, is an early Prototype Legionary for the Adeptus Astartes that had operated circa M29 and M30. RTB-01 was made sometime after LE-2 (or, as he calls himself, Leetu), and was said to be deeply loyal to the God-Emperor of Mankind-- a contrast to LE-2, who was loyal to Erda.
Serkan participated in many events during the Unification Wars as an early Astarte, constantly changed under the Emperor's careful and precise hand until he was something far more stable than what the late Thunder Warriors had been-- forgotten sources at some point mentioned a lack of a soul, or at least, one so hidden away into the Template that it was like skipping a step of stairs and into a steep fall, allowing for a particular resistance (though, not immunity) to the forces of the Archenemy. Not much is stated about Serkan's status. However, some reports (more accurately, rumors) suggested he was at some point serving under one of the twenty Primarchs as a de facto Legion Master, specifically under ███████. However, with the erasure of ███████, this left Serkan needing to be transferred to another Legion. And another, and another.
It is not said what happened to him after the Horus Heresy. Reports presume an untimely demise against the daemon Primarch, Angron, at the Siege of Terra. However, there have been sightings of a heavily-augmented Astarte alongside unknown (or, perhaps, forgotten) Chapters within the Imperium.
In truth, it is a tragic tale, according to an old interview by an archivist that had their work subsequently censored. Surviving the Heresy, Serkan drifted from Chapter to Chapter with none to call his true Primarch, none to call his true Lord-- for that was the God-Emperor Himself. Left horribly disfigured, RTB-01 now lingers with far lesser-known Chapters, his contributions to the Imperium completely forgotten and unheard of. Shortly after an outburst towards an Astarte chaplain, Serkan was soon sent away for penance. It is unknown what his status is at this time. Presumed dead.

ABELARD WERSERIAN.
--
Abelard Werserian is a former officer of the Navis Imperialis who has served as seneschal of the House von Valancius Rogue Trader dynasty in the Koronus Expanse for solar decades under the leadership of Theodora von Valancius.
When Theodora was recently assassinated during a Warp incursion on her flagship, Werserian had to transfer his solar decades of loyalty and experience to the house's new Rogue Trader, a distantly related individual who had met Theodora only a scant few solar hours before her death.
Solar decades ago, the diligent and imperious Abelard Werserian was first officer on a Navis Imperialis cruiser, until fate intervened in the form of Theodora von Valancius, an eccentric, wayward Rogue Trader. Different as night and day, the pair learned to appreciate and respect each other during a joint operation between Navis Imperialis and Rogue Trader forces. Impressed, Theodora used the right of requisition granted by her Warrant of Trade to claim Abelard as her new seneschal -- a position that confers the highest honours, as well as the greatest burdens.
Decades later, Abelard, as the Rogue Trader's right hand, remains vigilant against threats to House von Valancius' trade empire. Time and its tribulations have turned his hair gray and his demeanour even more difficult than it was in his Imperial Navy days. And yet Abelard is still one of the most reliable of the Rogue Trader's crew, fiercely loyal to the trade empire he helped to build and operate. Anything that endangers this precious creation he views as a personal threat. And these dangers are many, for great and fearsome powers lurk in the depths of the Koronus Expanse. Is there still enough strength in the aging seneschal's hands to hold the trade empire together and protect it from ruin as he seeks to guide a new and untested Rogue Trader in their duties?

LUXFRIED VON VALANCIUS.
--
Luxfried von Valancius, dubbed a 'Hero of Footfall' and 'Savior of Janus' as well as a long list of many other titles, is the Rogue Trader of the von Valancius dynasty, and is undoubtedly a peculiar sight. Once a boy born in the ice-hails of Inwit, he became an aspirant (and soon full-fledged Space Marine) of the Imperial Fists Chapter. Rising through the ranks to become a Lieutenant, Luxfried for a time resided in the 5th Company to be the warden of and tend to the Scriptum Ascenda aboard the Phalanx, though at some points had been stationed to other planets when more Battle Companies were required.
Having been stationed on an unknown planet, Luxfried, alongside his battle-brothers, were tasked with protecting an important Fortress World somewhere near the Koronus Expanse, where Luxfried looked after a squadron as well as many Imperial Guardsmen. However, many were killed in the defense, with Luxfried and only a few of his brothers as survivors. From this failure in protecting not just some of his own battle-brothers, but also the guardsmen he was supposed to look after, it had begun Luxfried's spiral into his need for punishment and penance, as well as the beginnings of the curses within the Imperial Fists' geneseed.
Years later, after jumping through MANY hoops just to even come into contact with him, his dynasty's predecessor-- Theodora von Valancius-- managed to contact Luxfried and invite him to her vessel to choose a successor to her dynasty, as he was distantly related to the dynasty by blood. Luxfried at first despised the concept of leaving the Chapter... however, after realizing this could be the beginning of his own journey of penance, he eventually relented and arrived to Theodora's flagship. He would meet Edelthrad, a psyker and Theodora's successor, as well as some of Theodora's retinue.
This was not a peaceful arrival. With heretics led by Theodora's Master of Whispers, Kunrad Voigtvir, they attempted to storm the flagship and for Kunrad to seize the ship for himself and perform a ritual on the bridge to transcend to a daemonic being... and the death of Theodora. However, through the quick-thinking of Luxfried and the rest of the retinue, they were able to fight their way through the ship and reach Kunrad-- but did not reach Edelthrad in time. In order to assist what remained of the ship, Edelthrad lunged towards Kunrad to stop him, but stumbled into the ritual circle and became a Chaos Spawn. This led to Kunrad's retreat, and the new retinue inevitably killing the now-turned Edelthrad.
With Kunrad gone as well as the heretics slaughtered, the Chaos Spawn killed, Theodora dead and no one to succeed her, there was only one person who could-- and that was Luxfried.
Luxfried, bound by duty, became Rogue Trader of the von Valancius dynasty. He was separated from his Chapter and now must overlook this dynasty and conquer the Koronus Expanse in the name of the Emperor. However, the encroaching darkness caused by past failures and geneseed flaws leaves Luxfried becoming more isolated.
The Lord-Captain is a horribly stoic, monotone and deadpan fellow who is as stubborn as his Primarch, and certainly can come off as rude due to a need for efficiency and believing some do not meet his high expectations, at his hearts Luxfried is a gentle soul protecting what remains of his compassion in walls of rockcrete. Most of his more grim and cold responses are a result of the curses of his geneseed, of the mindset of Death Before Dishonor and the risk of Dorn's Darkness (as the Excoriators assisted in the 'Last Wall Protocol', contributing a portion of their strength to the Imperial Fists Chapter to help it rebuild).
Perhaps one day, the Lord-Captain will be able to free himself from the curses of his geneseed and allow those in his retinue to know the real him.

THE STARS REPENTANT.
--
The Stars Repentant were undoubtedly a rather tragic Legion during the early days of the Great Crusade. Now long forgotten, the Second Legion was once a powerhouse, meant to be a vanguard for the Emperor's many forces. Led by Lord Aurelius Augustus, they were considered an up-and-coming Legion of their time. However, the Legion held far darker secrets-- by all accounts, they were heretical in the Emperor's views, allowing fraternization with xenos, studying the abominable intelligence of old, and rumors that they possibly studied the Warp.
Originally, the Legion started as a penal legion. Meant to be an example to the families of the Terran warlords of old, many relatives and family members to these olden barbarian kings were forcibly turned into Astartes-- their minds were wiped from intensive hypnodoctrination, one goal being given to them: slaughter the enemies of the Emperor. They razed the homes of the people they once called families, striking down those they once called brother, sister, mother, father. None were safe from the Emperor's wrath-- the Repentant Legion would be an example to all of what happens should you go against Him. They were equipped with special power armor dubbed penance armor, with bolts that would be forcibly driven through the connector points on their body, meant to cause pain for the wearer. It is, by all accounts, like wearing an iron maiden. It did not help that much of the Legion was more psychically sensitive due to Lord Aurelius's geneseed, leaving them wrought with nightmares and whispers that they could not understand.
However, it is said there was one Astarte that had unintentionally resisted this hypnodoctrination. A young man by the name of Columba Sancta, this battle-brother would become the Legion's first Chaplain. Having broken from this hypnodoctrination, Columba was horrified to realize that they'd been killing those they once held dear. Wrought with grief, he proclaimed that-- should they ever meet their Primarch-- their genefather would certainly despise them.
He and many of his fellow Astartes, being shown the truth of what happened to them, mourned their old lives and families, struggling to come to terms with what they had done.
When Aurelius would eventually be brought back to the Imperium, the Second Lord had been allowed to meet his Legion, where Astartes knelt before his presence, believing themselves unworthy to be in the presence of their Primarch. What they did not expect, however, was for Lord Aurelius to drop to his knees and weep at the state his sons were in. He begged for his father to pardon them, which He had allowed for His newly-returned son. His Legion could not believe this-- how could they be forgiven after everything they've done? With all the suffering and horrors they had seen, the sons of Aurelius could only come to one conclusion: Aurelius was not just a Primarch, he was surely a god, as no normal man, not even the Emperor Himself, had forgiven them for their sins.
Aurelius taught them astrology and astronomy alike, bringing them comfort in divining the stars, giving his sons new names in order to represent a new era. This was when the Legion was then called the Stars Repentant.
They made their homeworld on Aurelius's own, Iskaarre III, an ice world with horrible sub-zero temperatures that not many would be able to survive were they not from the planet, with a mobile star fortress not unlike the Imperial Fists' Phalanx meant to be a citadel for the families of the Legion's Astartes (dubbed the Ursa Major), with residential sectors and marketplaces, even an inner palace meant for the Lord himself. Culture boomed, reminiscent of the days of old on Terra of decadent rococo-era Italia, and Aurelius's banner of the worlds he dubbed the Valero Empire flourished under his rule. It was said Astartes were allowed to mingle and fraternize with normal humans, allowing them to keep a firm grasp on their humanity. Some may have even been able to have families-- this, however, is unconfirmed.
The Legion, by all accounts, had been thriving.
This era of prosperity could not last for them, however. When the Emperor had learned of the heresies of the Legion, they were excommunicated. The executioners of the Emperor, the Space Wolves, hunted them down and razed their homeworld of Iskaarre III to the ground-- but the Legion managed to just barely survive with what remained at their star-fortress. They hid away amongst the stars, operating in secret and attempting to assist the Imperium despite their excommunication and being erased from Imperial records, as in the end they dedicated themselves to Mankind.
Even this could not last as, when the Horus Heresy came to be, Aurelius's forces were slaughtered by the Emperor's Children. The presence of these horrible daemons and the sights of the second slaughter of their Legion led to many Astartes falling to Chaos and succumbing to rage, turning on their kin while Aurelius made a desperate last stand in the main hall. In the end, Aurelius was supposedly slain-- his limbs were detached from his body, his body disappearing, and many of his children killed while some had fallen into the Warp from portals that were forcibly opened by the presence of daemons.
By all accounts, the Legion was eradicated. Its star-fortress is but a husk of what it once was, merely a shadow of its former self. The homeworld of the Forgotten Lord is now but a death world-- forgotten by the Imperium.
Though, there are some rumors-- there are remnants of the Legion, somewhere, within the Imperium of Man, hoping to one day restore their Legion and to assist the Imperium once more. This, however, is unconfirmed.
Notable figures of the Second Legion or associated with it are as follows,
Legion Master Furia Sancta. According to very old Remembrancer writings, he was indeed a biological sibling to the first Chaplain, Columba. A rather cold, serious fellow, he continued the duties that Lord Aurelius could not when busy with the Great Crusade. He looked after Iskaarre III and performed many rites there, serving to lead the Legion during Lord Aurelius's absence. However, with the Razing of Iskaarre, he was filled with an inextinguishable rage for those that had slaughtered his kin, and vowed to one day get vengeance on behalf of his brothers. He was lost within the Warp during the attack on the Ursa Major.
Reclusiarch Columba Sancta. Once considered more meek, the Reclusiarch was-- shockingly enough-- a cheerful sort, which was a complete contrast to the Imperium's rather stoic Astartes. He took great pride in preaching about their god, the Second Son, and rallied his fellow battle-brothers onto the battlefield with pure determination. By all accounts, Columba may have very well been the heart of the Second Legion and a paragon of their ideals. He was lost within the Warp during the attack on the Ursa Major.
Champion Norim. As a very promising fighter, Norim rose through the ranks effortlessly with his battle prowess. He always looked for a fight, taking his losses in stride and striving to do even better. Norim always held his head high, proud and unceasingly determined in his goals to prove the honor of his Legion through old-fashioned dueling... though, it often just ended up in ties or draws. Honor was important to him-- and even as he was interred into a venerable Dreadnought, Norim still fought bravely and was unmatched by his kin. He was supposedly killed in the Razing of Iskaarre.
First Captain ██████. Silent, cold and deadly, ██████ led the First Company of the Stars Repentant. The First Company served as Aurelius's vanguard, marching forward without fear and wielding mighty banner-spears that displayed their Legion's heraldry with pride, striking fear into the hearts of their enemies and inspiring hope in many. █████, as Captain, oft stayed close to Lord Aurelius in battle unless the First Company was sent somewhere else (which was often the case). He could not ever afford a moment of being caught off-guard, and thus never seemed to take a break-- where many had chosen to have names of their own, █████ could never choose a name that he believed he was worthy enough for. He was supposedly killed in the Razing of Iskaarre.
Archmagos Alioth Alkaphrah. A somewhat blunt and certainly cold Archmagos, Alioth is a very bitter member of the Adeptus Mechanicus that led the Star-Touched-- also known as the Iron Apegas-- a personal branch of the Mechanicus that Aurelius had personally picked to assist his Legion, striving for knowledge as much as many of his fellow kin, but refused to dwell on the past and look for mere scraps in Mankind's history. Instead, he looked to the future, determined to make use of what they had and to advance Mankind. Far less man than machine, Alioth can only be described as a hunched, bug-like thing of metal and machine, having personally hooked up his amygdala to cores, which he can use to activate or deactivate his emotions as he wishes. He went missing shortly after the evacuation of the Ursa Major.
Magos Nirisch Archothivl. The Magos was certainly far softer compared to much of his Mechanicus kin. As the personal attendant of Legion Master Furia's armor and apprentice to Archmagos Alioth, it was upon Nirisch to assist in the removal and applying of Furia's penance armor, as well as repairs of his armor and weapons, and tending to the machine spirits. When not accompanying Lord Furia, Nirisch was usually either assisting the Archmagos-- or, in later years into the Heresy, tending to the core of the Ursa Major and serving as a soft-spoken guide for Lord Aurelius. Often stuttery, nervous and awkward, this old soul preferred to be amongst machines than people, but often made an exception for the Astartes he served. Presumed dead after the Second Slaughter on the Ursa Major.
~
Corporal Zacharia De Acutis. Much more recent compared to the Great Crusade and Horus Heresy (shockingly), Corporal De Acutis is a guardsman in the current era of the 41st Millennium. Crude, crass and brash, Zacharia does not hold back or mince his words often unless he is in the presence of one of the Emperor's Angels or other Lords. He hails from the now-death world of Iskaarre III, though does not know the name of his own home nor the system he came from. With Cadian forces depleted with the loss of Cadia, Zacharia was unceremoniously placed into the ranks of the Cadian 8th. He is still on active duty.
Serf Rina. As a very gentle soul, Rina was not meant to last in the grim darkness of the far future. However, through a shocking course of events, the young woman had found herself as a member of a ragtag retinue allowed to be on the ruins of the Ursa Major. Stuttery, shy, and eager to please, Rina rushes around all over to try to serve her Lords the best she can, and barely sleeps unless she is told she can be excused for the evening. While having gone missing from her homeworld, some accounts say she still does indeed serve on the Ursa Major.
