mer! robert already knows something’s wrong before the handlers even come.

he can tell just from the signs—glassy eyes, the way you haven’t been eating, the paleness that colors your scales. you’re sick. he doesn’t leave your side, tail swishing anxiously, curled close like that will fix it.

he bites a handler when they take you. it’s anger, sharp and territorial. mine, his hindbrain screams, and he’s clamping down on the nearest gloved hand. they don’t react, just leave, all hushed tones and quick glances at him. 

you’re sick, but he didn’t think they would take you. he huddles behind an outcrop of rock and pretends the currents of water are you pressing against his side.

You've probably seen the same still, him on some talkshow in the 90's, he still had the beard and he was holding a sloth.
