this is old n i posted this on my priv on his bday but thinking about kunigami and how his ego was always doomed in a way because it's so rigid in terms of following fairness and morality.. (・_・; something that can only go so far in blue lock. sure he had insanely good physical stats but when you're paired with players who have the ability to balance both, you're not going to make progress. his desire to play and follow his internal moral code, to give everyone a chance because he believes so strongly in fairness holds him back from his individuality without him realizing it.
this is why this panel just always makes me realize that shidou was one of the few people to put that together as well. something i think he doesn’t get enough credit for. shidou is someone who would give something straight to you and it's for your own good. shidou's comment really raises a deeper question- can the guise of fairness prevent you from reaching your fullest potential? like apply what he is thinking to real life situations. shidou's comparison is certainly… one way to put it, but, it is literally just that. you're not proving your worth. you're dulling your own shine without realizing it. sometimes you need to be unfair to others in order to be fair for yourself. you can't hold fairness as a high virtue when in reality it's just a limitation.
literally always ruins my day because was the person kunigami became really a player fostering that growth and truly someone going through a genuine evolution or nothing more than just a product of a system? an experiment? was kunigami- a boy who just dreamed of playing soccer and someone who believed everybody deserved a chance, someone who spoke up and fought for those he loved, diminished for the sake of the selfishness of a man who wanted to level with his rival? sobbing EGO WHEN I CATCH YOU .. i fear that kunigami was a doomed character from the start- he traded one form of restriction for another and he's too far gone to turn back. sure, he's gotten better, but, at the same time i think that there had to be some way for him to embody the heroic ego that made him who he was and still become a really good player. like sure he's strong now but at the end of the day he's replaceable. there's nothing there anymore to make him stand out the way he once did. i’m so sad bye (◞‸◟)
