Description:

This allegory shows a personification of Virtue, a central concept in the 17th century, in her blue mantle, leading a male figure, draped in a contrasting red, up into the heavens and crowning him with a laurel wreath. They are accompanied by a pair of genii holding a banner with the title and the painter’s signature. Intended for the king’s audience chamber at Ulriksdal, the work summed up the lessons Ehrenstrahl had learnt from contemporary Italian Baroque painting.

“Blau Mantel” by Paul Klee, 1940

This lovely creature was made by Paul Klee during his dying days.

“Blau Mantel” I think is Deutsch for “Blue Mantle”, perhaps meaning “Blue Coat”, either as in a blue coat the creature wears or a blue coat of paint. I’ve also seen it titled “Blauer Mantel”, but I’m gonna stick with just “Blau” because that’s the most common title. As far as I can tell, Klee didn’t have a “Blue Period”, but I like how strongly the painting uses the color. It’s very Blue Period material.

It isn’t clear, at least to me, what the creature is. I feel like it resembles a blue-wooled llama, only it’s a carnivorous llama with gigantic eyes. I’m assuming it’s not intended to be a real animal, because Paul Klee drew a lot of weird stuff, but I could be wrong. It could even be a cat if it were abstracted enough.

Fame and Erato, Muse of Love Poetry

Description

The precise subject of this painting is not clear, but it appears to represent the Muses of epic and lyric poetry, Calliope and Erato. The figure on the right, Erato, is identified by her lyre—the attribute of the Muse of lyric and amorous poetry. The figure on the left is more difficult to identify because Conca did not follow closely the standard representations of allegorical figures. The presence of the globe and of the compass held by the winged goddess are attributes of Urania, the Muse of astronomy, while the book and crown of laurel are attributes of Calliope, the muse of epic poetry.
