Had my first player death in my Delta Green campaign last night. It was interesting trying to figure out what would happen when they drove a pickup into an extra dimensional beastie. I went with them getting squished as the creature stopped them, but the truck kept moving. It was a great session.
do u think it’s still fine to play dnd or mtg or whatever as long as its an older version or some vintage boxset you bought off eBay or whatever or if you pirated it in some way or am I dumb and not know anything
I don't think it's some great spiritual crime. You're still perpetuating the brand by talking about and playing it with others but like, my main reason not to do that isn't moral, but instead the fact that everything they do, there's another game that does it better. I don't play card games so I'll focus on the rpg side here.
You could pirate OD&D and AD&D and 2e, but the OSR movement has made thousands of retroclones and games inspired by that era of D&D that either do the exact same thing but a bit polished and without the brand name (Swords & Wizardry, OSE), or do new and interesting things in that space (Knave, Mork Borg, Cairn).
You could pirate D&D 3/3.5e, but if you really wanted to play something with that ruleset (heaven forbid) Pathfinder 1e is the same thing but cleaned up and without the brand name, just pirate that instead. There's other games based on 3.5 I'm sure but like. Again, you don't need to do that to yourself
You could pirate D&D 4e, but there's a renaissance of games inspired by 4e lately, from Fabula Ultima to Draw Steel to Pathfinder 2e to Lancer (🤢) and you'll likely have more fun with one of those.
I don't think 5e even really has an identity to be emulated, sorta just a whateverburger mid-crunch fantasy combat game, and there's no shortage of those out there, Free League Publishing makes several good ones, I'm partial to Dragonbane and Forbidden Lands.
And, crucially, there's lots of good rpgs not at all in the design space of any of the above, like Beam Saber or The Zone or Mechwarrior Destiny that you can download (purchased or not) or buy a physical copy of.
Life is too short to waste time on a WotC game, you deserve better
