Wanderlust, A New Term and Mum
I am back in Durham, in the midst of term one and I am so filled with wanderlust it is distracting. I have papers to write and books to read, and all I seem to be able to do is dream of hiking fjords and mountains and of camping outside in the wilderness. Yesterday I was just looking through my board on Pinterest called Adventure is out there! and it filled me with a wanderlust so fierce that I was tempted to go outside and start hiking--anywhere--in the pitch black darkness.
In other events, just before leaving home I spent an incredible couple of days with family. On the day of my departure my sister, mum and I explored book shops, I got a pair of running shoes, and we consumed good food and frozen yoghurt. It was fantastic, to say the least. The journey over was miserable, as I had gotten sick the very day I departed and travelling whilst sick is NOT a fun experience. However, when I reached the UK, one of my friends and his family welcomed me with open arms and I felt so happy! I am so lucky; my friends are incredible, my family is the best and I constantly am given so many opportunities of which some people only ever dream. Any-who, I went to a local pub with my friend and his friends from home and enjoyed myself whilst looking onto the interactions between the group of guys--which was thoroughly amusing. The next day we drove up to Durham (from London) with his family and partially moved ourselves into our house.
The next two weeks were ram-packed with the planning and execution of my college's Freshers' week. I serve as international representative for my college and thus was in charge of the planning and execution of international week in addition to helping out with Freshers' week as well. This entailed helping people sort out visa and passport checks, rooming issues, organising various ice-breaker activities and more. It was such a genuinely incredible experience--helping people feel happy and at home in their new college environment--that I would never take it back for the world, but by-gum it was exhausting! And the people I got to meet and work with?! Some of the nicest and most outgoing people I have met thus far in my life.
So, two weeks after our arrival in Durham my housemates and I got to actually move into our house, as we had been working from college for that initial time. Term started the day after our duties finished and so we all were zombies when attending our first classes. So far my lectures have been pretty good, with the exception of a few lecturers leaving the rooms a bit too warm and their voices a bit too monotonous making it too easy for the curtain of drowsiness to slip over many of us in the room.
In other exciting news...MY MUM CAME TO VISIT ME!!!
This is monumental, as it marked the first time I have shared my little world of Durham as I see it now with any of my family. I had such an incredible and relaxed time with my mum, it was a breath of fresh air! Obviously it was still quite busy, being the third week of term and all, but overall it was really chilled. I had some much-needed heart-to-hearts and wake-up calls, nights of mince-pies and chocolate whilst watching Gilmore Girls, and countless walks around and through the magic of Durham. So, I had a fantastic time...one not too easily put into words (as is the case with the best of experiences); though the words that come closest are I think, "Thank you Mom."
Well, that's all for now...better get on to the library day that I have been planning for so long. Though I think I might take a meander through the forest first.
