The photo below was taken 4 years after her first novel ever, The Bluest Eye, was published.

3 years before her second novel, Sula, was published. 3 years before her third novel, Song of Solomon was published to high acclaim and won a National Book Critics award. 9 years before she left publishing all together. 10 years before she was awarded a literary chair at Albany University. 12 years before her play “Dreaming Emmett” was performed by State University of NY. 13 years before her epic novel Beloved was published. 14 years before Beloved is denied any National Awards. The same 14 years but 2 months later that Beloved won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. 19 years before she became the first Black woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature.

This. Is. Joy. Before she knew what she would become. After feeling a taste of success. While crushing personal publishing goals. During a stormy and wild period in her life. Toni experiences joy. And that joy carried her.

Let her joy in this moment and all the others uplift you.

1.24.17 First and Last (18/100 days of productivity) So my first and last classes for today were canceled. I had a lot more time to do readings. Right now my friends and I are taking a break, watching Scandal. I've started searching for summer internships and an apartment in the city. Hoping to start establishing my career in publishing this summer. Fingers crossed 😊
