regarding creatures and things that go bump in the night, it's basically free game, right? as an example, I'm allowed to assume that there are unicorns and maybe a cyclopes or two that possibly roam the depths of the forest? sorry for such a silly question!

Nonsense, that’s not a silly question!

Dear Munakata, you will find any manner of beast your mind can conjure up - and then some - wandering both the forest and the lower, underground levels of the academy. All sorts of nasties lurk in the shadows, waiting for unsuspecting prey to take advantage of and gobble up. Many of the monsters inhabiting Hiraeth’s island will appear alien to many of you, however. Perhaps a little more monstrous and nasty than your average beasties from a modern world.

However, we invite you to use your imagination when describing these beasts! There is no limit to what can and can’t appear in Hiraeth, so feel free to go wild. In short, yes a cyclops and unicorns may appear - it is really up to you.

All we can say for certain in the matter is that the monsters are more dormant during the day, and at night when the crystal lights dim and the area becomes less illuminated - they will become more aggressive. It is for this reason we enforce a strict curfew: sometimes, monsters find their way to the upper floors inside Hiraeth and we would prefer to not have any late night incidents.

At all times, please be mindful of the underground levels of Hiraeth - especially the dungeons. The further down you venture, the more tough the monsters become. The same can be said for the forest surrounding the academy - the less you see of the school, the more closely united and stronger the monsters will become.

Welcome to Hiraeth Academy. Due to your great accomplishments in your own world, we have taken the liberty of summoning you here to Hiraeth in hopes that you will aid us in shaping the minds of those less experienced with their special abilities. We ask that you please report to the Headmistress’s office after reading this letter, so that you can receive a full briefing of what is expected of you. We are certain that your prowess with Defensive Studies will benefit those attending our academy. You will become their instructor, a guiding hand that will lead them down what we hope will be the right path.

You will be housed in our specialized staff housing, in room B-106, located in a building separate from the school, tucked away on the western side of campus. After you have seen to visiting the Headmistress, you are welcome to visit there any time to replenish your energy and have a break from teaching. You will be asked to introduce yourself to the students at the next meal, so please come prepared.
