INTERVIEW: Bo Bruce of Equador.

Singer Bo Bruce and producer/musician Henry Binns of Zero 7 return tomorrow with their brand new EP Tribal War on Pegdoll Records, the follow up to their acclaimed 2016 debut album Bones of Man.

Featuring three tracks, the hypnotic ‘Belly Up’, lead single ‘Treble Oh’ and the beautiful  ‘Prisoner,’ Tribal War is a compelling listen – an immersive fusion of 90s downtempo ambience and minimal electronica held together with Bo’s distinctive vocals.

Below is the stunning new video for ‘Treble Oh’ filmed on location in a deserted ex Ministry of Defence building near Weston Super Mare. Featuring flashes of Equador’s artwork by the artist Emilie Pugh, who has been the band’s visual inspiration since the start, this video is actually the first video Bo and Henry have filmed as Equador, with all previous videos being animated.

Bo Bruce and Henry Binns first met in 2013 whilst working on tracks for Bo's top ten debut album and immediately hit it off as a writing duo. In 2015 the pair holed up in the Zero 7 studio, Henry being one half of that hugely popular Mercury nominated group, writing and recording the debut album by Equador.

We had a chat with Bo about 'Treble Oh', Tribal War and much more. Read the interview below.

Equador has just released it's latest single 'Treble Oh'. Please tell us a bit about the inspiration behind the track.

"Really it was a reaction to how much longer we have left on Earth. Cheery right?!"

You also shared a music video for 'Treble Oh'. What made the two of you want to feature in the video this time instead of using animation?

"Rowan while came up with an idea which featured us and it was good enough for us to want to actually appear in it!"

'Treble Oh' is taken from Equador's upcoming new EP Tribal War. What can you tell us about the new record?

"More of us but maybe a slightly tougher sound. More head nodding and less cerebral than the album."

How is Tribal War different to Equador's debut album Bones Of Man? How has your sound evolved?

"I think we have more of an idea of what we want, it’s more electronic this time too. More production based."

What was your favourite part recording Tribal War?

"Favourite part is always when I’ve struggled with an idea and finally it comes together. All of these songs have many versions, I don’t know if that’s a good or a bad thing, but landing on the one is like falling in love. Or birthing. Or both?"

Will there be any changes to Equador's live show?

"The live thing is always a conversation, we are a studio project really and so a lot of decisions need to be made about how we would appear live... work in progress!"

You obviously love working with your husband Henry in Equador but is there anyone else you would love to collaborate with?

"So many people! Dead and alive! All of our heroes. It’s too embarrassing to say that I could even imagine collaborating with any of them... but let’s just say I admire the work of alt-j, Rick Rubin, here we go magic, talk talk and Radiohead."

Do you have plans to release any more solo material?

"Constantly making not sure about releasing it.... both solo material and Equador material continue to bubble along side by side."
