I was honored to get to spend some time with my very first karate instructor today, Master Bob Allen. It was an honor to be congratulated by Master Allen on both my new book and my Godan ranking. We haven’t trained together in 34 years...wow, does time fly! And, to top the day off, Master Allen is going to be writing two chapters in my new book! Master Allen said he was honored by my coming by to see him, but the honor was all mine. This photo will definitely be going up on my office wall, right by the framed certificate of my first belt, which hangs on the wall next to my 5th Dan certificate. It was really nice to see Master Allen again and reminiscence about the old times and talk martial arts with the man who first got me into the martial arts. We talked about how we both had mellowed out over the years (which is a good thing)! We also discussed my book, BUSHDIO: The Way of the Warrior, which he really liked. It was such an honor to see how proud he was that one of his students had continued in the martial arts and was contributing to the martial arts world. Seeing and talking with Master Allen brought back so many old memories...happy times! He gave me my martial arts foundation and it was a good one! I am so lucky that I had such a great teacher right at the beginning of my martial arts career! Watching his class after we talked, also brought back a lot of great memories of the old days when we trained hard and left blood, sweat and everything we had on the floor of the dojo. Good times! I bow to you, sensei. Thank you for all the education, both physically and morally.
