The story was inspired by Elvis Presley being drafted into the United States Army in 1957. Jesse Pearson plays the role of singer Conrad Birdie, a teen pop idol who was just drafted. A lucky teen fan, Kim MacAfee (Ann-Margret), is thrilled to be randomly chosen to give Birdie his last kiss before leaving for the Army. This is not taken well by Kim’s high school sweetheart, Hugo Peabody (Bobby Rydell.)
The film helped make Ann-Margret a superstar during the mid-1960s. Her performance earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress and her next role was with Presley in Viva Las Vegas.
