These are my thought's in the lead up to our show, Bodies Over Bitumen, for this September Melbourne Fringe:
I spent two years living in squats, on floors of storage cupboards, in roof-top shanties, on generous couches, and the floors of rotundas.
It was a choice I made. A kind of open-ended project, of living outside four walls. I thought I was going to make life and art happen, and through my privilege, it kind of did. But what I mainly found was a survival that consumed everything.
"Fashionably homeless," was the catchphrase, and through this, I saw into other worlds, but only really got a glimpse. Worlds of cold, the elements, the eyes of others, heavy objects, the law system, grit and feelings which could only be described as instinctual - although I do not believe in instincts. It showed me that we all have the ability to become what we fear most. All can become killers when put in the right (or wrong) circumstance.
For Bodies Over Bitumen I hope to focus in to the raw and elemental. The feeling of exposure and vulnerability. A kind of coming to terms or, making terms with, cold, hard, and unforgiving spaces. Sk
