Before she was Oprah the talk-show host with her OWN network, she was a reporter. —— “Back when I was a reporter, I’d say ‘m’am I know your house just burned down but can you take the rollers out your hair?’” —Oprah Winfrey on how she cared about the image of African-Americans on TV even as reporter. (This statement made me laugh this AM so I had to share.)

"Stagecoach Mary" aka Mary Fields was the first African-American woman to drive a Unites States mail coach.

She delivered the mail sitting on the coach smoking a big cigar, sometimes having to fight her way through blizzards and fend off attacks by wolves. She was past seventy when she decided to retire from the mail delivery job and open a laundry…Fields didn’t lose her spirit. Legend has it that she once punched a man and knocked him onto the street because he neglected to pay his laundry bill.

The first African-American member of the FCC was Dr. Benjamin L. Hooks.

Hooks was not only the first African-American to serve on the body of seven, but the first African-American public defender in Memphis, TN. He also served as executive director for NAACP from 1977 to 1993.
