I am a Brazilian citizen and I am saddened by what is happening right now in my country. I do not like former president Jair Bolsonaro, but having Lula as president is not a victory for us, please be careful about the congratulations when you are not informed regarding our politics. Here is a small guide for those of you who wish to understand why our population was so divided as to have Lula win by less than 2% of votes.

There are three main points I took into consideration when deciding whether to vote for Bolsonaro or Lula: corruption, speech, and competence.

Corruption:

There are scandals related to both candidates, but lets remember they are both innocent people proven guilty. Still, it is important to analyze the evidence to be well informed of both.

Bolsonaro and his family are being accused of having bought 107 properties in the last 30 years, about 51 of each were bought partially or completely with cash. The value of these properties amounts to about 26.5 million reais (about 5 million dollars) when corrected for inflation. This is not a crime in itself, but it is extremely suspicious. It is important to note, however, that the investigation included about 32 different people (including his ex-wives and their families). This means about 27 thousand reais (about 5 thousand dollars) were spend per person, per year. Bolsonaro has also stated that he has nothing to do with the money spend by his extended family and that his son Flavio participates in property investments, where those cost very little.

In regards to Lula, several members of his and other government parties were found to be guilty of embezzling money from the government. To keep things shorter I will only speak of the accusations related to Lula himself. He was accused of 11 crimes regarding his time as president. Of those, he was absolved of 3: obstruction of justice, passive corruption in the Operation Zealots, and criminal organization. The crimes for which he was condemned were passive corruption and embezzlement in the Sítio de Atibaia and Guaraja Triplex. Both properties were acquired by companies involved in the corruption scandal (OAS and Odebrecht) and had evidence of being used by Lula, including text messages, witnesses and personal belongings (the most damning of which, in my opinion, was a boat saying “Lula and Maísa”. For those, he was found guilty in the trial, appellate, and high court, and spend 580 days in jail. However, the process was annulled as the trial was found to be unconstitutional (rightly so in my opinion). The judge, Sergio Moro, showed his lack of impartiality in several instances, and many pieces of evidence were acquired through wiretapping. The trial was also supposed to happen in Brasília instead of Curitiba, as that is where the supposed crimes occurred. Because a lot of time happened between the crime and the trial, and taking into consideration Lula’s age of 72, the re-trials were delayed and haven’t happened to this day. What about the other accusations you say? Five more instances of either traffic of influence, criminal organization, passive corruption and money laundering were suspended, and another of traffic of influence was arquived. Lula is innocent until proved guilty, but it’s important to note that he was not absolved of his alleged crimes as most are yet to be trialed.
