6/2/2025 - Bone2.exe: Life after Death
A game from 2022 that feels like it came right from an early 2010s flash game website in both the good and kinda irritating ways. The game itself is pretty small in scope since it focuses on small, sometimes single-screen little platforming levels with some light shoot-the-enemies combat in between. It's also got compressed-sounding MIDI music grabbed from other games and stock sound effects too to fit the vibes. The pixel art itself is pretty nice looking too, I really dig the boss sprites and pretty much all the backgrounds.
I did have a little hangups with the gameplay though. The biggest hurdle was just that X is your jump button and Z shoots, when (for whatever reason, I don't know what game conditioned me to think this) my muscle memory kept telling me that it should be the other way around, which really made me struggle with the precise platforming that you need to execute at various points. The character physics seem really heavy for this kinda platforming game too, it feels like you drop like a stone.
The Light World/Dark World gimmick is kinda neat though, I like the idea that sometimes the levels get easier in design/layout if you go to the Dark World (this hppened mostly during the late game, and in one level nominally where damaging spikes replace a bottomless pit, thus giving you a bit more recovery opportunity). Needing to beat every level in both states and picking up their hidden Cake collectible for full completion was a little annoying too though.
