        “  it’s  fine  ,  cal  .  i  can  walk  .  you  can  go  back  inside  .  “  she’s  not  exactly  far  away  from  home  .  carrie’s  house  is  walking  distance  from  her  own  ,  after  all  .  but  she’d  rather  give  her  shirt  a  chance  to  dry  before  she  leaves  .  so  she’s  sitting  by  the  edge  of  the  pool  ,  fingertips  hopelessly  pulling  at  the  sticky  fabric  .  she’d  already  tried  to  clean  it  in  the  bathroom  ,  but  she  didn’t  want  to  be  inside  that  house  any  longer  than  she  had  to  .  she  should’ve  known  there  was  only  a  matter  of  time  before  her  former  friend  opted  for  pettiness  &  seeked  some  sort  of  confrontation  .  she’s  elarned  to  live  with  the  bitter  comments  &  annoyed  looks  -----  there’s  a  part  of  her  that  knows  she  deserves  them  .  she  has  a  right  to  be  mad  at  her  .  but  another  part  of  her  just  wonders  how  much  longer  until  they  can  at  least  be  civil  again  .  how   much  longer  until  she  stops  paying  for  the  consequences  of  the  pain  she  lived  with  for  a  year  ;  for  the  relationship  she  ruined  .  “  really  ,  it’s  okay  .  “

               HE HADN’T SPENT this much time away from Cal since there’d been a traveling team tournament and a band performance on the same long weekend. Thank god for facetime and snapchat and all the other apps Nick had used to keep Cal abreast of his life, because without it, Nick probably would have decided just to quit the traveling team and convince the band director for him to play the cymbals again. 

But it was Monday night, and they were both arriving home within two hours of each other. Nick arrived home first, and had dropped his stuff off, kissed his mom, and immediately went over to the Beckers’ to torment Charlie until her twin could get home and do it for real. But as soon as the doors opened and Cal had walked in, Nick had grinned, letting the twins get their hug in first before he made it a group hug situation and, like he’d promised himself he wouldn’t do, promptly stole Charlie’s twin from her. 

“Dude, we gotta figure out how to make sure these weekends don’t get scheduled at the same time. Not getting to go see your performance? Like, broke me, kinda? I’m gonna need two weeks of recovery time.”

               CAL MIGHT HAVE been the first Becker Nick had met, but as soon as he’d been introduced to Charlie, he’d realized that there wasn’t ANYTHING he wouldn’t do for her. When she needed anything — anything at all — Nick was happy to oblige. Cheerleaders needed manual labor for a fundraiser? — Well, they knew to check Nick’s practice schedule now and just plan around it. 

But his favorite times were when Charlie needed a distraction. From life, or school, or just about anything in the world that just needed to not exist for an afternoon. 

Because when Charlie needed a distraction, that meant that they got to go ice skating. 

He wasn’t sure when the ritual had started, but it was the one thing they did when she needed to step away from the world. And since she’d done the figure skating gig, they got to have a lot of fun skating around. Sometimes he’d bring out some sticks and they’d hit around. Sometimes she’d teach him how to spin. It didn’t matter; it was always fun and if he could get her to smile, he counted it as a good day. 

That Saturday, they’d been at the rink for the better part of the morning already when Nick looked over and caught the end of a shiver. Well, that just couldn’t do. Skating over to his bag, he looked for a sweatshirt, but could only find a couple of jerseys. His traveling jersey, a home and an away for the school’s team, and his old middle school jersey that still fit if he didn’t put any pads on underneath. 

Pulling out the smallest, Nick held it out to Charlie. “Why didn’t you tell me you were getting cold?”

                THE SHAMELESS ADMISSION caused Nick’s laughter to ring through the now-empty ice rink. A perk of having worked there on his off-seasons: the owner adored him and let him use the ice when he wanted. A perk of having Cal be your go-to guy for all things ever? Sarcastic comments like this, and someone Nick always knew would have his back. 

He’d already gotten his own skates on and was puttering around the ice, idling near the bench where their gear was. “It’s not that early,” Nick argued with a grin. “And you’re here now! It’s Saturday! WEEKEND! What better way to celebrate than to hit some shit with a stick?”

The number of times I have extolled the virtues of the JATP RPC simply on the fact that we are so small that. if there’s any duplicate anxiety, it hasn’t shown up on the dash is ridiculous. There isn’t a number. And a major aspect of that is because if we were in another fandom, the fact that we both write Reggie might have gotten in our way of becoming just as chaotic as we now are, Karla! Your Reggie is so pitch-perfect as you already well know, but let’s speak for a moment about your other muses. MuseS, because every single character you touch turns to gold. You’re so incredibly talented and know just how to add the write amount of really believable gen z sarcasm to a character in order to make them feel so rooted in reality! I try as hard as I can to be in your muses’ good graces because there has never been a single thing you’ve written for me that hasn’t absolutely SENT me. Thank you so so so so so so much for sharing your talent with us 🥺  ( also you’re one of the nicest people in the RPC but I know you have a #rep so I won’t tell anyone your secret’s safe with me )

        eager  voice  pierces  through  the  loud  music  ringing  in  her  ears  .  she’d  recognize  that  pitch  anywhere  ;  it  makes  her  part  from  the  nearly  emptied  water  bottle  pressed  to  her  lips  &  she  quickly  shifts  her  position  to  grin  at  the  other  .  “  charlie  ,  i  literally  just  sat  down  !  “  a  chuckle  flees  her  lips  ,  dark  gaze  captivated  by  the  crowd  of  sweaty  bodies  lost  in  the  rythm  of  yet  another  upbeat  song  -----  she’s  still  buzzing  with  energy  ,  drawing  it  from  her  surroundings  .  she  might  be  a  little  dehydrated  but  she’s  not  ready  to  throw  in  the  towel  for  the  night  yet  ,  not  even  close  .  the  liveliness  that  fills  the  dance  floor  is  contagious  &  after  all  ,  dancing  is  the  perfect  way  to  blow  off  some  steam  after  weeks  of  stressing  over  finals  .  they  needed  this  .  she  needed  this  .  “  -----  okay  ,  hold  on  .  “  she  downs  the  last  drops  of  water  &  leaves  the  empty  bottle  on  the  counter  .  hand  slips  easily  into  charlie’s  own  before  she  hops  off  the  stool  &  leads  the  way  back  to  their  friends  .  it  only  takes  a  moment  to  get  swapped  back  into  the  music  .  “  make  some  room  ,  guys  !  “

       tanya leans closer as she speaks, an impressive feat considering the twist her body is currently resting in — one leg resting over the armrest of her chair and the other tucked underneath her, her foot dangling off the edge of the seat — and holds her phone out to snap a couple photos of charlie as she poses. her grin widens, shouting encouragements as charlie does the requested spin ( and then some ), before she finally drops her phone onto her lap with a laugh. 

       ❛ you look fucking amazing. i’ll send you those later so you can post ‘em, they’re way too good to just sit in my camera roll forever. ❜ she finally untangles herself from her seat, slipping her phone into her pocket before sliding an arm around her friend’s waist, tongue poking out between her teeth as she grins almost impossibly brighter. 

       ❛ for now, though, ❜ she starts, tugging charlie across the floor with her, deeper into the ocean of dancing teenagers currently occupying the wilson home, ❛ this song is totally calling our name. ❜ she twirls her friend, scrunching up her nose with a giggle as she watches the dress flare out around charlie’s legs. a glance up, and — yeah, people are totally staring. good, they both look hot as hell. ❛ lets give this dress the debut she deserves! ❜

        “  what  level  of  stupid  are  we  talking  ?  “  pencil  balanced  inbetween  two  fingers  ,  she  looks  up  from  her  journal  with  curious  eyes  ,  ever  intrigued  by  the  shenanigans  nearly  constantly  brewing  inside  charlie’s  head  .  she  has  to  ask  about  the  level  ,  it’s  a  given  -----  she’s  already  pushed  her  luck  with  her  dad  once  too  many  times  in  a  fairly  short  period  of  time  .  she’d  rather  not  force  his  hand  &  get  herself  grounded  indefinitely  when  there  are  friends  to  see  ,  rehearsals  to  get  to  &  possible  shows  to  play  .  even  so  ,  it’s  hard  to  notice  the  twinkle  in  the  other’s  eyes  &  her  enthusiastic  smile  without  getting  secondhand  restlessness  .  “  practical  prank  stupid  ?  -----  if  there’s  any  possibility  of  being  caught  on  security  cameras  or  going  viral  ,  let  me  know  so  i  can  put  a  paper  bag  over  my  head  .  “
