A birthday in compelled-coronacation captivity was the perfect time to open my last 2002 Chateau Haut-Brion Bordeaux Blanc! Haut-Brion Blanc is a true unicorn wine! Chateau-Haut Brion has about 48 hectares of vineyards - less than 3 of which produce fruit for white wine. Indeed, there are only about 600 cases of Haut-Brion Blanc produced annually. . Despite the prodigious percentage of Sauvignon Blanc (78% Sauvignon Blanc and 22% Semillon for the 2002), Haut-Brion Blanc is not your typical porch pounder! While most Sauvignon Blanc spends minimal time in stainless steel before being released for immediate consumption, Haut-Brion Blanc is aged for 13-16 months in 100% new French oak barrels and will age incredibly well for decades! . The wine looked like liquid gold in my Zalto Universal stemware! The seductive, complex aromatics included mixed dried fruits (grapefruit, lime, lemon, honeydew melon and orange rinds), subtle honey notes, gravel, wax, and savory spices such as white pepper, anise and marjoram. . The palate is absolutely mind-blowing! Oxymoronically, it is richly ethereal. Initially it kisses your tongue softly then caressingly coats your entire palate. But a split second later, the intensity, tension and acidity begin to mount. At the 15-second mark, when the finish on even most good wines has faded, this finish is still intensifying - albeit with an indescribably silky, luxurious mouthfeel! In all, the complex finish lasts for at least a full minute (Yes, I used a stopwatch)! Just unreal! The perfect wine for a night of quiet, confined contemplation! . If you get a chance to try Haut-Brion Blanc, by all means do so! It is unquestionably one of the greatest white wines in the world! In addition, there are numerous outstanding Bordeaux Blanc options at lower price points for more regular consumption.
