Somewhere Out There//Drabble
Carter drew in a deep breath as he narrowed his eyes and focused on the solid looking tree in front of him. He could feel energy coursing through his body, roaring in his ears as it started to form and swirl around his fists. He smirked and threw a burst of energy straight at the tree, sending bits of bark and splintered wood everywhere.
He grinned as he continued to repeat the action, his eyes glowing crimson as he felt a rhythm set it. Then something snapped and his body went flying backwards into the first tree he had made a practice dummy, everything around him exploding in color. He was out for a minute, then groaned as he blinked back into consciousness, pushing himself up onto his feet to survey the damage.
Surrounding trees in the woods where he was training had lost limbs, and most wore big dark stains where they were burned from the explosion. Leaves were sizzling, gentle stems of smoke coming from their black edges. this was like the mess in the labs with Shanta all over again. It stung his pride more than anything. Almost as much as the consistent pain in his back where his spine had connected with the trunk of the tree.
Carter deflated a little bit, his shoulders slumping in defeat. He had expected himself to get through this through sheer will and endless hours of training. But so far it had done jack squat for him. But he had to be ready for the sentinels. His big brother had asked him to help fight, so that was exact what he was to do. Powers straightened out or not, he'd be there to help Tyler fight. Even if Shanta wanted to strangle him for it.
A small hiss escaped from between his gritted teeth as he rolled his shoulders. A wave of pain shot up his back, and for a moment all he saw was stars floating around in his vision.
"Damn..." he muttered, debating between calling Shanta or Tyler and calling it quits, or waling it off and continuing to train despite his back. It was pitch black out, plenty past midnight, and he was exhausted. He'd forgotten to bring coffee, a grave mistake.
So what did he choose to do? Keep training, obviously.
He continued to bully the poor trees until the sun pokes it's head above the horizon line. Then he passes out against a stump and doesn't wake up for a solid 12 hours.
When he does come to, he feels completely hungover.
"Ugh...sunlight...? Why is it light out...? No fair..." he whined groggily, rubbing at his eyes.
Then Carter moved and his back screamed in protest.
"Shit." he swore loudly, fully awake now, "What the hell?"
His spine felt like it was on fire, and the slightest movement triggered another wave of pain. But, maybe he didn't mess it up that bad. Maybe he was just being a wuss and could tough it out.
So that's exactly what he tried to do. Again. Until he promptly blew himself up.
Blew himself up?
Blew himself up.
