A Look at One Edition of the Boulder Daily Camera
With varying levels of ability across our presentation desk, it's more often than not easy to tell who has designed what pages. Any follower of my blog knows my style - evolving into something that heavily favors white space, varying font weights and tint screens. You also know I will admit I have lots to learn, and plenty more I could be doing on my covers, should I be given that time or experience.
But in looking at today's edition, cover to cover, it's not too hard to pick my page out.
A few comments on my own page:
Since we were running with not-all-that-exciting art, I wanted to jazz up the centerpiece with good typography and some tint screens. It was easy to pull the CU colors onto the page, and have them mesh well with the photos themselves.
I also liked the contradiction in design and words for the headline - which was intentional. I'm sure some won't but that's OK.
On the others ...
There are quite a few that aren't filled out, leaving odd, jutting lines across both the front and local section covers. There are also competing headlines where I'm sure that could have been avoided.
The A1 centerpiece looks cluttered, especially where the breakout information is involved. If you see the map in print, it's hard to discern the information at that size, anyway.
I respect that different design levels exist, and that we all design differently. But it seems strange to think one edition of the Camera would have such a discrepancy in one edition. Just my own thoughts on the matter.
