Tuesday's Shot of Bourbon Trivia

The creation of the bourbon ball, a traditional Southern confection typically consisting of a dark chocolate bonbon laced with bourbon and topped by a pecan that is enjoyed particularly during the holidays, is credited to Ruth Hanley Booe of Frankfort, Ky. She and Rebecca Gooch, both substitute schoolteachers, formed Rebecca Ruth Candies in 1919. In 1936, about seven years after Rebecca married and sold her portion of the business to Ruth, a dignitary at Frankfort's sesquicentennial celebration remarked that the two best tastes in the world were Mrs. Booe's candies and Kentucky bourbon. She worked on a recipe blending the two for two years before introducing the Bourbon Ball. Rebecca Ruth uses Evan Williams bourbon in its bourbon balls.
