Yueliang’s beauty and talent has spread far and wide throughout China. Almost everyone knew her and her performing abilities that made her famous. Even the emperor and his princes were infatuated with her.
But this was all starting to become ordinary for her. Everyone was easily charmed by her that there was no excitement for it anymore. The nervousness of wanting to know if the audience liked her has slowly disappeared. Her teachers has told her this was a good thing, that this means no one can achieve what she had done.
No, there must be some people who can challenge her. So, she set her eyes on a country far away from home to test herself.
France. A place where the arts flourished, according to the dance troupe she conveniently joined to experience travelling outside of China. The long journey was worth it since the atmosphere and the scenery was a lot different. She felt that she stepped into a different world.
She came to a party as a partner of the troupe leader. More like, an eye candy and a beautiful one since everyone has been staring at her ever since they have arrived.
No, she wasn’t wearing those French dresses with lace and frills. Her hair wasn’t made up with curls either. She stuck to her ‘Oriental’ clothing, flowy, in pastel colors, refined embroidery on the bodice. Her hair was done in an elaborate style of a half ponytail held up in twists and plaits. Truly, she gave a different appearance at the party.
Golden hair and eyes, she would’ve blended well if she wore those French dresses.
Of course, compliments showered onto her, dutifully translated to her by the troupe leader. She each gave them a smile and thanked them. It was hard to charm them with a conversation using a language she has only known a few weeks ago.
She had been itching to test out if she could charm anyone with her skills. The performer had tried singing to a previous small party before and it went with average results. It was hard to be entranced by a song you can’t understand its meaning.
It was starting to feel frustrating so she excused herself from the boring conversation.
To the balcony she went, sighing out loud seeing that there was no one around. She was starting to think that this journey was too ambitious, too impossible for her to reach.
The orchestra started playing a song. She had forgotten what it was called but it’s been a long while since she danced to something. It was a similar one the leader taught her how to dance to.
And so she danced without a partner under the moonlight. Thankfully, a black-haired man strolled outside and she excitedly waved to him, gesturing a swaying dance movement as a way of inviting him to dance with her.
