As soon as the words leave his mouth, Leonard forgets what they had even been shouting about in his shock that he actually said that. He wasn't supposed to say that. His feelings for Archer had grown in the last few months that they had gotten to know each other and Bones was emotionally smart enough to realize that somewhere along the way, he fell for the younger man. The beautiful and stubborn and amazing man who was now running away from him.
To be fair, Leonard was frozen in his tracks for a moment or two from the shock of his confession. If he were ten years younger, it might have been accompanied by a faint flush of bashfulness. Instead the heated moment had his cheeks flushed for all the wrong reasons.
(It also complicated matters that Bones definitely loved James as well -- which that realization had hit like a sledgehammer because he had done the whole poly thing before and it was perfect. He's not sure his heart could take it if they rejected him or worse. So far, it was not going so great.)
Shaking himself from the shock, Leonard runs after Archer despite how much his heart hurts. "Archer!" he calls, following the trail of blood. Bones manages to catch up to the younger man as he stumbles. The doctor gently grabs hold of Archer to keep him from falling.
"Listen, Archer, I won't say I'm sorry for what I said because it was the goddamn truth, but I don't expect any sort of response. Hell, if you wanna forget I said anything, then that's fine, but please come back to the medbay so I can take care of your wounds," he pleads earnestly, knowing that his heart will ache for a long time after this if Archer rejects him totally and that he's ready to make peace with that.
(After all, if Archer rejected him, it's not likely that James would reciprocate Leonard's feelings either. Perhaps he could put in a transfer to help heal his broken heart. Time and space may not heal all wounds, but at least they helped the process.)
