Braid of Fire! It's a very weird card considering phases and I never know how to best use it
Braid of Fire is a card that got a lot better with the M10 rules changes.
Previously, any mana from Braid of Fire that you didn’t use would cause you to lose life as it emptied from your mana pool, but now there’s no such penalty so there’s really never a reason to not pay Braid of Fire’s cumulative upkeep cost.
Braid of Fire is best used in a deck with a lot of instants or cards with activated abilities. I played it in my Ashling the Pilgrim EDH deck before it was mothballed, and I often used it to do things like pump Ashling, return Kuldotha Phoenix to the battlefield, etc.
If Braid of Fire is teamed with Soulbright Flamekin, does it carry the mana into the main phase because to my understanding Soulbright Flamekin's effect for trample lasts until end of turn but the adding the mana is just for that phase which at the time is during the upkeep phase and would then drop off come the start of the main phase so is my understanding correct?
The mana will empty from your mana pool at the end of your upkeep step.
If you really want to net mana this way, just activate it twice in your upkeep, then a third time in your main phase.
