Women in open button-up shirts. You agree.
The thing that pisses me off re: warming centres etc is it’s based on “survivable” temperatures, and I have to ask: survivable for who? At what cost?
Are you going to grumble about health care costs and “wasted” nursing hours when that unhoused person comes in with frostbite on their extremities or severe burns bc they tried to keep themself warm the only way they could?
Are you taking into account malnutrition, inadequate clothing that may not be dry, untreated illnesses, and the effects of drug use (chronic and acute) on a body’s ability to respond to bad weather? Or even identify when the person is In Trouble? Or are you basing “survivable” on what a healthy middle-class person in the latest bad weather gear can handle?
Would you want to spend a night outside in -15° weather, even IF you’re that healthy middle-class person?
Awright so I saw it mentioned Gosling decided to Do That with Grace’s glasses and then realised no one with glasses does in fact do that, and I have a thought:
Grace’s comment at the beginning of the movie that he’s bike commuting and it’s not for exercise: he probably has vision coverage through work. It’s also almost certainly not NEARLY enough, especially if he has a strong/complicated prescription. So, part of the problem is between that and it just not being a priority vs sourcing equipment for Cool Sound Physics Demos, his prescription is WILDLY out of date
And speaking as someone who has been in that position. Yeah you do stupid shit with your glasses (including just not wearing them). Mine end up on top of my head enough that one kid I looked after would do THAT if you handed her a pair of sunglasses rather than put them on. Yeah you should be wearing them, yeah they Kind Of help, but they’re also just Wrong Enough to be distracting, and at least the Wrong distraction of no glasses is familiar and doesn’t involve something on your face
I also love the idea that Grace spent (in movie canon months, I think in book canon years?) on the project and nobody thought to send Strat’s most precious little guy to town for an hour to get a fresh pair
One of the things I liked about phm is that everyone spends most of the film in Big Sweater. Big Coat. Big Quilt. It’s such a pleasing contrast to the scifi aesthetic of skintight catsuits, stiff military cuts, and flimsy blankets that look like they would be neither comforting nor warm. When you’re in a big metal tube hurtling through the void, you need a lil Cozy.
Homelessness 🤝 fatness
