Watershield (Brasenia schreberi) is a common, native aquatic plant that grows in the slow-moving waters of Central Appalachia’s ponds and lakes. As the summer pushes into fall, the plant’s leaves turn brilliant shades of orange and red. They also start to exhibit bizarre patterns of insect damage, which have a certain morbid beauty to them.
