SUBMISSION | Our community is in pain
The municipality is currently in Brasilito apparently set to destroy the Cameron Dorado, the Indira and adjacent buildings for lack of complying with the rules of their concession.
For many PTSD is visceral right now. It was devastating when the muni flattened all the original businesses on the beach in the square of Brasilito (not that many years back), whether it was technically legal or not. Keep in mind local businesses are struggling more and more to earn a profit with rising costs, exponential growth and self-serving foreign money. Adjusting for rule regulation changes, weekly trips to Santa Cruz to contest frivolous denuncias by big money and self-serving individuals, and “simple” upkeep (paying employees, maintenance, higher product costs, etc) are more and more unattainable.
These, and many under threat of the same, are the landmarks we know directions by! These are the institutions that are the essential ingredients to the cultural flavor of the towns we know and need to protect.
Some will remain flattened because of the Maritime Zone rules introduced in the late ‘70s, even if they were grandfathered in by law. But others will become a new foreign-owned business, further pushing out the locals and stripping our towns of their identity. As polarizing as this last statement may be, we can all say we have seen it happen.
Today’s events are a clear wake-up call. Let’s be completely honest, animosity is real, valid, and growing for these reasons, among many others. Ignorance is no longer an excuse. Our small beach towns historically thrived in the strength of community, and we are failing them.
Maybe it’s finally time again to think about what it means to be a community and act like one…unite, not divide. Set self-serving behavior aside. Period.
Simply put: support local; know your neighbor; (try) to speak Spanish; join your local ADI…there are so many roles available for you to be a part of in your community. So let’s do this! Let’s show up.
