i was reading the meta you reblogged about how twd fandom treats steven yeun and i was wondering if you know where i could find the interview where lauren cohan points out that glenn isn't awkward or nerdy, just shy? i tried googling but nothing came up, and i just started watching the show recently, so apologies if it's something that's well-known and easily found.
Hi! Oh, racism in TWD fandom – at this point I think I can write a full thesis on this subject…
You probably mean this meta? I remember that interview, but, unfortunately, I don’t exactly remember the source… I think it might have been a video interview / a con, or something between late 2012 or early 2013. Or maybe it was a published article… But yeah, interviews like that were very common back then, when Glenn & Maggie’s relationship was still a new thing on the show. At the cons people would ask Steven gross questions along the lines: “how does it feel to date a white girl on screen” – one time one of these questions annoyed even Michael Rooker, that he had to personally shut down a person who asked it (I think a clip from that con is still available somewhere on YouTube, there were definitely some gifsets in tags).
Gleggie still gets hate within some parts of this fandom. The fandom hate that Maggie had gone through during the s4-5 arc (when the fandom was accusing her of being a “bad” sister) was primarily because 95% of those haters were (and still are) uncomfortable with Maggie being in love with Glenn. That’s the main reason. That’s the only reason. For example, this is an actual quote from someone’s post in Glenn’s tag just a year ago:
“I can’t believe Maggie chose her f*ck buddy over her sister!”
Note how they called Glenn. The thing is that there are people who actively refused (and still refuse) to see Glenn as Maggie’s husband. These people can’t wait for Glenn to die, just so that Maggie could hook up with the next white guy. Few years ago you couldn’t step in Maggie’s tags without seeing someone wishing for her to cheat on Glenn with D*ryl or Rick. There’s an active Maggie/D*ryl shipblog on this very site, ffs.
Don’t forget that this was an actual thread on one of the IMDb forums in 2014 (thankfully, the mods took it down on the second day). I’ve seen that thread before they took it down and I can tell you, that half of the people there supported the racist OP.
I can continue this with a lot more examples, but I’m too tired and frustrated with this fandom at this point – especially the more I see people wishing for Glenn to get the bat.
Anyway, sorry couldn’t help you with the interview… And thank you for your message! :)
