Loving the fact that Jaehyun has this cold-hearted bad boy role to portray in the NCT character play yet everytime he's given a chance he keeps proving that he is nothing but a shy and embarrassed boy. That man has just released a 200 second long cover of a love song and he looked into the camera exactly two times.
This will probably be the last addition to the Jaehyun movie debate for some time from my side, because it's getting too heated and I think people aren't able to discuss things in a reasonable manner when they're angry (me included).
This post got really long so more is under the cut. Thanks to everyone who take their time to read it till the end.
I've watched the original movie.
It's only 100 minutes long but things get escalated pretty quickly and the storytelling might get confusing, because with each cut the situation gets worse and more dire.
This gets most obvious when the teacher meets the student. The student is a perfectly normal boy, doing typical high-school stuff, chasing girls, being a jerk etc. Through some of his gestures or coincidences, the teacher starts having flashbacks to memories he made when he was still with his lover 20 years ago. And this is where the pace gets really fast, cause the teacher starts thinking "Ah, he does this the way she did it" and he really starts convincing himself that the student is indeed his lover reincarnated. Meanwhile the student gets really confused and annyoed, cause he has no idea what's happening.
At this point, I think it would make a really interesting movie if the plot really was about the teacher going mad and losing his mind. He'd be the typical anti-hero and the audience could go from "Ah, it's so tragic, he sees her in everything and in everyone." to "Oh no, it's gotten out of control now and it really needs to stop before he hurts someone."
The problem is that the student character then starts having flashbacks of his own, meaning, he indeed is the reincarnated lover and during the last 10 minutes of the movie he suddenly remembers everything. The plot at this point moved from a psychological drama to an unreal fantasy. When they finally meet again, it's not as a teacher and a student, but as the man and the woman who fell in love with each other 20 years ago. "Thank you for waiting." - "Thank you for coming back."
To summarize:
- there's no imbalanced relationship (due to the age gap), because there is no relationship between the teacher and the student at all, in fact there's minimal interaction between them (mostly just looks or dialogues of three sentences top), there isn't any physical relationship either
- as soon as the teacher starts suspecting that the student could be his previous lover, he immediately questions his own identity and tries to fight it as much as he can (ultimately succumbing to madness, alcoholism, sexually attacking his poor wife)
- as soon as the students/other teachers/school start suspecting the main character from having a relationship with a student, he is fired, as he should be
I think people misinterpreted the story because all they've read was the plot. This isn't trying to be a homosexual romance that would justify and fetishize a teacher/student relationship. In fact the surrounding characters and even the main leads voice out quite loudly that it is wrong. I think most people imagined a 40 year old creep grooming a young boy and ultimately manipulate him into a suicide, but that's really not the story here.
I'm sorry if some of you interpreted my words as an attack on the LGBT community in the heat of the argument, but that really wasn't what I was saying at all.
The Jaehyun situation is fascinating. Different person, different opinion. It truly is so interesting.
Person A)
I'm so so so excited omg yessss Jaehyun actor!
Person B)
Well his character isn't TRULY gay, so I won't watch it.
Person C)
The teacher is married and HAS A CHILD, how is this okay???
Person D)
The age difference is disgusting.
Person E)
Umm, isn't this illegal?
Person F)
Why can't we have normal gay stories?
Person G)
Finally the fanfictions will come true.
Like people have so many different opinions, some points obviously more valid than the others. Personally I am excited and I am glad that Jaehyun is acting again and I wish him all the best. But I also hope there will be some rearrangements and changes to the original script.
