Sister of MH370 pilot breaks silence to foreign media

KUALA LUMPUR, July 14:

The sister of Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah has broken her silence in defence over accusations that her brother is a prime suspect in the investigation of missing Malaysia Airlines (MAS) Flight MH370.

Sakinab Ahmad Shah told Singapore’s Channel NewsAsia that it was impossible for her to believe that Zaharie was the one who piloted the plane to its end.

The Boeing 777-200, carrying 239 people, including five Indians, an Indo-Canadian and 154 Chinese nationals, mysteriously vanished on March 8 en route to Beijing from Kuala Lumpur.

Sakinab said it was a big shock when her brother called from Ipoh to tell her about it on the morning of March 8.

“For now, I would consider that I have lost my brother.

“But, to make matters worse, fingers are pointing at him,” said Sakinab on The Mystery of MH370, a Channel NewsAsia programme on the missing aircraft and the surrounding events.

Channel NewsAsia also reported Sakinab as saying: “We couldn’t figure out why somebody who would want to commit suicide would prolong the agony of flying for four, five, six hours just to land down there in the Indian Ocean.

“If it was done, if he was the one who planned it, he has to be some kind of Einstein, which he was not.

“He was just a man who took so much to aviation. He loved aviation, he spent a lot of his funds buying model airplanes.

“If he could, I think he would attach wings to himself and fly — he loved flying that much.”

Zaharie had come under scrutiny in the first few days after the MH370 went missing following the discovery of a flight simulator in his home, in the midst of many theories as to why the plane disappeared.

The flight simulator had drills rehearsing a flight far out into the southern Indian Ocean and a landing on an island with a short runway.

The drills had been deleted from the simulator, but experts had managed to retrieve them. However, Zaharie had made no secret of his hobby.

The plane has yet to be found in spite of a multi-country search now into its fourth month, without a single piece of debris identified or recovered.
