ive always wondered about jonah and adams relationship to concepts of masculinity and queerness
i explore this in my bleach fic (wip) kinda but i feel like those concepts were severely dampened by the exodus of people from mandela county . along with the thousands who fled or disappeared went notions of masculinity and what it means to be a proper man and how to treat your fellow man . albeit, i think remnants of a past society plagued with oppressive gender roles still somewhat lingered and were taught to them in high school or whatever, but def not with the same amount of vigor that it was in the 90s .
i think adam wouldve clinged onto these concepts a lot harder than jonah , being that adam's proof of humanity was contingent on how accurate he can reflect human behaviors . he wouldve absorbed these social structures like gospel , whether he was aware of it or not . hes like . so autistic to me in this sense (masking and developing less than moral ideals to fit in) but thats besides the point BAHA
and jonah is def more aligned with "queerness" in the sense that he holds himself a lot more loosely than adam , therefore he'd be a little more immune to masculinity propaganda lol . he follows his pleasures and if he likes it he will pursue it . (sometimes i think his hedonic / short term gratification lifestyle is his detriment but thats another discussion hehe)
and i think that kinda gets to the root of why i like them so much -- its this specific dynamic . tbh i think simply their relationship is just jonah going "i want us to be happy" then adam going "i want something else. you arent my happiness" "then whats your happiness" "i dont know. im on a pursuit of self destruction that hurting everyone i love that i cant control. i dont really want this. i dont know what i want" "then let me help you find your happiness" "i dont want to rope you into this" "its fine" "no its not" and so on . very . push and pull . hh .
