Brett Hoffmann, vocalist for long-running Florida death metal band Malevolent Creation, passed away due to colon cancer today at the age of 51.
Hoffmann’s vocals were savage and terrifyingly resonating, possessing a similar tone to Death’s Chuck Schuldiner.
In honor of Hoffmann’s contribution to death metal, here is Malevolent Creation performing “Remnants of Withered Decay” from their 1991 debut album The Ten Commandments.
Fort Lauderdale, Florida, 1991
1991. The Ten Commandments
is the debut album by band Malevolent Creation. It was produced and engineered by Scott Burns.
the band formed in 1987. The band’s original members were vocalist Brett Hoffmann, guitarists Phil Fasciana and Jeff Juskiewicz, bassist Jason Blachowicz, and drummer Mark Simpson. Phil Fasciana was the only founding member who stayed with the band consistently. The band moved to Florida a year after it formed, and they became a part of the emergent local death metal scene, landing a deal with Roadrunner Records and helping to develop the "Florida Death Metal" sound.
So although The Ten Commandments suffers a bit from one-dimensionality and some average moments, it is still a spirited example of early death metal proper. Not exactly an essential record for the lot of us, but for those who live and breathe old-school death metal, this record will likely command a place of honor in your collection. While it's not their best album (Retribution and Envenomed are a VERY close tie), it certainly holds its own as one of the best debut albums ever. Check it out!
