I was very relieved to see that Brian had set up his studio in 70 Arthur street after the closure of the Cre8ery gallery, where he'd previously operated from. I'm also very pleased to be able to share some of my favourite work of his with my followers here, as Longfield really is a star in Manitoba's art scene.
The winter night scenes capture the power of Manitoba's forests in the middle of their deep freeze. The choice of found fabrics stretched into paintable surfaces elevates what would originally be simple photorealism. The fabrics evoke a feeling of homeliness, the comfort of the sleeping place, but the imagery of each painting transports the viewer into the deadly nocturnal freeze where these animals live.
