America’s 100 Greatest - #38 Sebonack Golf Club (7,534 yds, Par 72)

Sebonack Golf Club is located in Southampton, NY. The course runs along Long Island’s Great Peconic Bay. The water components contrast the wild terrain of the fairways and greens. The course was designed using the natural contours of the land, which created waste dunes and burrows and swales around the greens. The signature hole is the 18th a 570 yd par 5. The hole runs right along the coastline to provide stunning panoramic views.

Jack Nicklaus and Tom Doak designed the course mixing their differing styles together. One challenge to creating this course was it lies beside two historic courses, National Golf Links of America and Shinnecock Hills. Since the course opened in 2006, Sebonack has only hosted one national tournament, the 2013 U.S. Women’s Open.

I love how this course differs from the traditional manicured style. I am partial to the rolling fairways and bunkers/sand dunes. I also like how there is still a water component to this course without having it be the main focus. This course looks like it would be challenging, but enjoyable to play.

America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses - #41 Wolf Creek Golf Course (6,939 yds, Par 72)

Wolf Creek Golf Course is located in Mesquite, NV. The elevation rises and falls as the course winds through the mountainous terrain. The lush green fairways stick out against the plain rock that encloses the course. There is also a creek that serpentines throughout the course.

Wolf Creek was designed by Dennis and John Rider in 2001. Wolf Creek is known as “a course of signature holes” because it is hard to choose just one. However, the designers choose hole 5 as their number 1 choice for the signature hole. Hole 5 is a risk-reward hole with multiple elevation changes.

I have never seen a course like this before. I think it is absolutely amazing! The reddish-pink mountain terrain provides a great contrast to the bright green fairways. This course looks extremely challenging.

“America’s 100 Greatest”

Number 36, The Golf Club is located in New Albany, Ohio. Pete Dye originally designed the course while transitioning away from conventional styles in 1967. A local (Jack Nicklaus) and Dye created a 5-year partnership to improve on suggestions, but 45 years later Dye redesigned every hole on the course. One of his biggest design elements was the use of railroad ties.

Hole 13 is a 369 yard, Par 4 signature hole. This hole doglegs left of the tee, so is considered a risk-reward hole. Far left shots are rewarded, but runs into hazards. Instead of railroad ties, Dye used pieces of telephone poles in the bunkers.

I thought the way Pete Dye designed his bunkers with railroad ties was unique. He used elements, such as wood, that were once natural in the design of his course. 

“America’s 100 Greatest Public”

Number 33, Pronghorn Club is located in Bend, Oregon. Jack Nicklaus was the designer in 2003 of this links course. The course began as a private club, but is now open to the public. Containing several natural elements, including lava formations and views of the Cascade mountains, the back nine of this course is said to be the best Nicklaus has ever designed.

Hole 13 is a 378 yard, Par 4 signature hole. A sand bunker acts as a buffer behind the green. Also, a rock wall is located near the bunker containing a waterfall that drains into the lake on the whole right side of the hole. A pot bunker in the middle of the fairway creates a challenging shot.

This course has remarkable views. With various natural elements, each hole has its own signature with different views. Courses like this are nice because you don’t feel like you are golfing the same hole throughout the course. The natural elements are again beneficial, creating hazards.
