The Brandenburg Gate by HJ in Ches Via Flickr: The white sign on the left warns that one would be leaving West-Berlin in 40 metres, or at least one might have done, before the Wall was built in August 1961. The photograph was taken from 17th June Street in the British Sector of the city with the Wall cutting across the street between the sign and the Gate. The street was formerly known as the Charlottenburge Chaussee, leading from the city centre to the Borough of Charlottenburg, but was renamed to commemorate the date in 1953 when the East German police put down the rising which was attempting to overthrow the communist regime in East Germany followingin Stalin's death. The Soviet War Memorial is in the trees to the left of the view. Beyond the Gate, the street continues as the avenue known as Unter den Linden ("Underneath the Lime Trees".)
