Here I am with other redcoats in a battle. I'm the one with the glasses and more Asian features than the rest. I along with the farthest man in the background have Brown Bessies, these were the standard muskets for the redcoats and it the British used them to expand their empire. But at this time rifles were making their first appearances, the man with a mustache has a Ferguson rifle which was the very first breech loading rifle, it had a plug that screwed open so the ball and gun powder can be poured into the breech. But Jacob aren't rifles and muskets the same thing? No, now I explained this in a previous picture but I'll explain it again for those who saw this first. A musket is a smoothe bore gun which means the inside of the barrel is smoothe, often the ball was smaller than the barrel so it shuttered as it went down the barrel which made it inaccurate meaning you have a better chance at missing your target. A rifle gets it's name because it has spiral grooves in it called "rifleing" this made the ball spin which made it fly faster, farther and more accurately so you have a better chance at hitting your target. However unlike the Ferguson which was a breech loader most rifles were harder to load since they were mostly muzzle loaders "which means your powder and ball go in the same way they go out" and to make the rifling work you had to make the ball a tight fit and to do that you needed a patch of cloth and wax which made the loading process slower and harder while with muskets like the Brown Bessie you just needed a rolled up paper cartrage which was the ball and powder rolled up in paper and so muskets were faster and easier to load.102550100 NestedThreadedFlat Oldest FirstNewest First
